The Center for Global Development (CGD)
The Center for Global Development (CGD) is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit policy research organization in Washington, DC, and London, UK that works on the issues and institutions that are critical to global development. Through rigorous empirical research and active engagement with the global policy community, we focus on the policy intersections of low- and middle-income countries and the governments, institutions, and corporations that can be partners in delivering greater progress.
The role
CGD is seeking a Director to lead its Global Health Policy Program, one of the largest thematic areas for CGD with approximately twenty-three research and policy staff based in both London and Washington.
The Director will provide overall strategic direction to the Center’s Global Health Policy Program. This will entail defining and delivering an agenda of creative, policy-oriented research and outreach on a broad set of global health issues, including financial and technological innovations, the efficiency and effectiveness of global institutions, global public goods like global health preparedness, and development economics related analytics in the global health field, among others. The Director will manage a diverse team of highly motivated professionals. As a member of CGD’s senior staff, the Director will also be expected to contribute to organizational initiatives and advance CGD’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism.

Key roles and responsibilities
- Providing intellectual leadership and setting the overall vision for CGD’s Global Health Policy Program
- Managing the Global Health Policy Program team and grant portfolio
- Conducting empirical research in the field of global health
- Engaging with potential funders, preparing proposals, and mobilizing financial resources to support the Center’s work on global health
- Engaging in policy outreach activities, including speaking engagements, media interviews, and interacting at a high level with key decisionmakers in the donor and technical communities
- Participating in the design and implementation of expert group consultations and working groups
- Authoring papers, policy briefs, books, and blogs targeted to policy makers, academics, and the general public
- Leading and managing the international Decision Support Initiative, a multi-country, multi-partner network committed to building institutional and data capacity for priority setting in health across LMICs
Experience and Skills

- Doctoral degree in public health, economics, or an MD, MPH, or degree in biological sciences with a strong record of work in social sciences
- A distinguished record of achievement and experience in the field, with demonstrated ability to manage a large multinational and multidisciplinary team, oversee a sizeable portfolio of existing grants, and lead multi-year projects to completion
- Experience engaging with policymakers in low- and middle-income and international organizations plus evidence-to-policy translation
- Prominence in the field of global health and strong professional relationships
- Track record of developing and nurturing funding relationships
- Proven track record of applying quantitative research to addressing practical, real-world problems and generating evidence-based policies
- Demonstrated leadership in creative scholarly work with a distinguished record of publications, preferably on economic and institutional issues in health
- Significant knowledge of current issues and debates in global health, economic development, and foreign aid
- Demonstrated experience in managing highly-motivated professionals and a commitment to diversity in research, hiring, and promotion
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
