Director of Horticulture

The RHS is seeking a Director of Horticulture to lead horticulture at national scale and deliver its Strategy to 2030, keeping horticulture central to the organisation’s impact, growth and reputation. The Director will set the long-term vision for RHS Gardens, living collections and horticultural standards, champion sustainability, climate resilience, biodiversity, plant health and biosecurity, and act as the principal horticultural ambassador with government, industry, funders, media, education partners and international networks. As a member of the Leadership Team, they will also contribute to governance, strategic projects, investment decisions, fundraising and advocacy.

Candidates will bring senior horticultural leadership experience, deep technical expertise and strong professional credibility, together with a track record of delivering strategy and transformational change in a complex organisation. They will be an inspirational, inclusive and compelling communicator, able to build high-performing teams, develop talent and forge trusted partnerships across a diverse range of stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead horticulture across the RHS, delivering the Strategy to 2030 and keeping horticulture central to our impact, growth and reputation.
  • Act as principal horticultural ambassador with government, industry, funders, media, education partners and international networks.
  • Set the long-term vision for RHS Gardens, living collections and horticultural standards.
  • Drive horticultural sustainability, embedding best practice in biodiversity, climate resilience, plant health, biosecurity, peat-free growing and environmental stewardship.
  • Champion horticultural skills, talent and professional standards through bursaries, education initiatives, mentoring programmes and industry partnerships.
  • Ensure our expertise shapes our shows, programmes, advice and public engagement, reaching and inspiring diverse audiences.
  • Build and convene partnerships across horticulture, environment, education and culture to extend our reach.
  • As Leadership Team member, contribute to strong governance, major strategic projects, investment decisions, fundraising, advocacy and stakeholder engagement.
