About Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is a world-leading centre for plant science, horticulture, conservation, education, and public engagement. Founded in 1670 as a physic garden for the study of medicinal plants, it attracts around one million visitors each year and holds one of the world’s most diverse botanical collections.
We have four gardens in Scotland; Benmore, Dawyck, Edinburgh and Logan. Through a wide network of national and international partnerships, we pursue our mission to Explore, Conserve and Explain the World of Plants, addressing global biodiversity loss and climate change.
RBGE is funded by Scottish Government Grant-in-Aid and self-generated income, reflecting our dual role as a public institution and an enterprising organisation. The continued growth of commercial activity, philanthropic support, and consultancy work is a key strategic priority for ensuring long-term sustainability and impact.
The opportunity
RBGE is now seeking to appoint a Director of Income Generation & External Affairs to join its Executive Team at a pivotal moment in the organisation's development. As RBGE prepares to launch its next Corporate Strategy, this key leadership role will bring together commercial income generation, philanthropy, marketing, communications, public affairs and wider stakeholder engagement to strengthen profile, influence and long-term financial sustainability. Reporting to the Regius Keeper, you will provide strategic leadership across a diverse portfolio of talented teams across the spectrum of external engagement, including engagement with the Botanics Foundation and oversight of the Botanics Trading Company.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
