Director of Information Technology

The University of Portsmouth has an ambitious Digital Plan and is investing approximately £25m this year in digital, data and technology capabilities that will underpin the next phase of the University's development. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Information Technology will play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering this agenda, leading a broad portfolio spanning digital transformation, cyber security, data and AI, enterprise systems, infrastructure modernisation and technology-enabled organisational change.

Current investment includes the implementation of a new Finance system, continued expansion of Microsoft 365, a new timetabling solution, a curriculum management platform, significant upgrades to network infrastructure, smart building technologies and IT teaching facilities, and the development of new data and digital capabilities. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to influence the University's future digital direction, ensuring that technology, data and information continue to enhance teaching and learning, research, student experience and operational effectiveness across the institution.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
