Director of Legal and Governance

Trafford is a great place to live, work, learn and visit, with strong communities, a proud cultural and sporting heritage, and a key role in Greater Manchester’s economic future. Our vision is simple and ambitious: a borough where residents, businesses and communities thrive. Achieving it requires trusted, enabling governance that supports good decisions, protects public confidence and turns ambition into delivery.

As Director of Legal and Governance, reporting directly to the Chief Executive, you will play a central role in our corporate leadership team, providing independent, practical advice to colleagues and elected Members, supporting sound decision making while ensuring the Council acts lawfully, transparently and with integrity. As Monitoring Officer, you will build trusted relationships across political groups, combining sound judgement and personal authority with the confidence to challenge constructively on complex and sensitive matters.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
