Purpose of the Role
To lead the strategic development and delivery of communications, marketing, public relations, stakeholder engagement, and brand management activities that enhance the profile, influence, and impact of IfS.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Communications
- Develop and implement an integrated communications strategy.
- Position IfS as a leading voice in safeguarding.
- Support organisational advocacy and policy objectives.
Marketing and Brand Management
- Lead brand development and reputation management.
- Ensure consistency of messaging and visual identity.
- Develop campaigns that increase awareness, engagement, and support.
Media and Public Relations
- Build and maintain relationships with media and key influencers.
- Manage media enquiries and crisis communications.
- Act as a senior spokesperson where appropriate.
Digital Communications
- Oversee digital platforms, websites, and social media channels.
- Drive audience growth and engagement.
- Ensure communications are accessible and inclusive.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Develop communications strategies for members, partners, funders, policymakers, and the public.
- Support consultation and engagement activities.
- Promote organisational achievements and impact.
Leadership and Governance
- Lead communications and marketing teams.
- Manage communications budgets and resources.
- Monitor performance through data, analytics, and stakeholder feedback.

Person Specification
Essential Experience
- Experience developing and delivering strategic communication plans.
- Experience managing media relations and public affairs activities.
- Experience leading teams and managing budgets.
- Experience of evaluating the effectiveness of marketing activity and using evidence to inform future planning.
Essential Knowledge
- Public relations and media management.
- Digital marketing and social media strategy.
- Brand development and reputation management.
- Stakeholder engagement and campaign delivery.
Essential Skills & Abilities
- Outstanding written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Strategic thinking and creativity.
- Media handling and crisis communications skills.
- Strong leadership and people management skills.
- Ability to analyse data to make marketing decisions.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of the leadership team.
- Strong research and analytical skills to identify emerging trends, opportunities and future demands.
- Ability to develop forward-thinking communication and marketing strategies that support the organisation’s long-term vision and objectives.
Desirable
- Senior communications or marketing leadership experience.
- Degree-level qualification in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Experience within safeguarding, charity, membership, education, healthcare, or public sectors.
- Knowledge of policy and advocacy communications.
- Experience managing national awareness campaigns.

Commitment
This is a voluntary, unpaid role requiring approximately 7 hours per week, with flexibility around working arrangements. The role is remote and UK-based. The successful candidate will be expected to communicate regularly with the COO and wider team and attend virtual meetings as required.
