Help shape the future of a newly incorporated mental health CIC
We're seeking a Director of Mental Health Services to join our Executive Leadership Team and lead the safe development of our peer-support, listening and future therapy services.

This Director will give mental health services a clear and authoritative voice at Board level. Their work will help us:
- Avoid blurred boundaries between community support, listening and regulated therapy;
- Design realistic pathways for people who need more help than Serenity can provide;
- Ensure growth does not outpace safeguarding, quality or professional oversight.
In the short term, the role will strengthen our public beta by helping us test whether service standards, listener arrangements, escalation routes and user communications are fit for purpose. It will also improve collaboration between service design, product development, Trust & Safety and Data Protection, so safety is built into Serenity rather than added after problems appear.
In the longer term, the Director will:
- Shape the clinical governance and delivery model required for Serenity Therapy;
- Help us form responsible partnerships and support the recruitment of qualified practitioners and advisers;
- Help the Board define meaningful measures of quality and impact, allowing us to learn from evidence rather than relying on good intentions.
The result will be stronger governance, safer services and a clearer path from an early-stage CIC to a trusted mental health organisation. Most importantly, the role will help ensure that people using Serenity encounter support that is compassionate, honest about its limits and designed around their wellbeing.
What are we looking for?
We are seeking an experienced mental health services leader who can help Serenity develop safe, accessible and credible support services from the ground up.
This is a senior executive and Board-level position. We are therefore looking for someone with substantial experience leading, managing or developing mental health, counselling, psychological wellbeing, health or social care services. An interest in mental health alone will not be sufficient for this role.

As Serenity grows and reaches its Salary Activation Threshold (SAT), this voluntary executive leadership role is intended to transition into a paid position, subject to the organisation's financial sustainability and governance processes.
We Would Particularly Welcome Applicants Who Have Experience In
- Leading or managing mental health, counselling, psychological wellbeing or related support services.
- Designing services, pathways, operating standards and quality frameworks.
- Safeguarding, mental health risk management and escalation procedures.
- Clinical or service governance, quality assurance and continuous improvement.
- Developing safe boundaries between peer support, listening services, counselling and therapy.
- Supporting, supervising or developing practitioners, listeners, volunteers or multidisciplinary teams.
- Using evidence, outcomes and service-user feedback to improve services.
- Advising senior leadership or Boards and providing constructive professional challenge.
- Working with digital, community-based, voluntary-sector or early-stage services.

The Serenity Project has recently incorporated as a Community Interest Company (CIC) and is entering an exciting period of growth as we prepare to launch our digital mental health platform.
The Director of Mental Health Services will join the Directorate Board and help turn Serenity’s mission into a safe, credible and sustainable service model. They will work closely with the Chief Executive, Chair, Director of Engineering and Trust & Safety leadership, bringing an expert mental health services perspective to strategic decisions.
The immediate priority will be to review and shape the service model for Serenity’s anonymous peer-support spaces and one-to-one listening service ahead of and following public beta. The Director will also lead the long-term development of Serenity Therapy, ensuring that future regulated clinical services are designed separately from peer support and listening, with appropriate clinical governance, professional standards and accountability.
What You'll Be Doing
As Director of Mental Health Services, you will work closely with the Founder, Chair and fellow Executive Directors to
- Develop the organisation’s mental health services strategy and delivery roadmap.
- Define clear service boundaries, pathways, standards and quality measures.
- Advise the Board on service safety, clinical risk, safeguarding and readiness for launch.
- Work across Engineering, Trust & Safety, Data Protection and Operations so service design is reflected in product decisions, policies and frontline practice.
- Establish an appropriate clinical governance framework for future therapy provision.
- Support the development of listener training, supervision, escalation and wellbeing arrangements.
- Help identify future practitioners, advisers and strategic partners.
- Chair a Mental Health Services and Clinical Governance Committee once established.
- Provide constructive challenge where growth, product or commercial decisions could affect service quality or user safety.
