Director of Middle Mile Network Operations

Overview

The Director of Middle Mile Network Operations is a senior-level leader responsible for overseeing the strategic execution and optimization of AIT Worldwide Logistics' middle mile operations. This role manages vendor relationships, leads cross-functional teams, and ensures operational efficiency through data-driven performance management. It is both customer-facing and solution-oriented, developing and presenting tailored logistics solutions that drive revenue growth while maximizing network capacity utilization. The position plays a key role in aligning operational execution with broader business goals and customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning: Developing and implementing strategies to optimize middle mile operations, including route planning, load optimization, and cost reduction.
  • Vendor Management: Managing relationships with third-party logistics providers, carriers, and other vendors to ensure they meet performance standards and contractual obligations.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Working closely with other departments within the AIT Worldwide Logistics structure to ensure alignment coordination across the supply chain to ensure customer satisfaction and improve service offerings within the AIT Middle Mile Network. This is to include executive leadership, sales leadership, and other identified stakeholders.
  • Customer Facing Solutioning: Develop and present tailored logistics solutions to customers, focusing on revenue generation and maximizing network capacity utilization.
  • Team Leadership: Lead and manage direct and indirect logistics staff to ensure effective execution of strategic plans.
  • Performance Management: Tracking and analyzing key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of the middle mile network. This includes on-time delivery rates, transportation costs, and operational efficiency.
  • Process Improvement: Identifying areas for improvement within the middle mile operations and implementing process enhancements to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve service levels and operational costs.
  • Budget Management: Developing and managing the budget for middle mile operations, ensuring cost-effective use of resources while meeting service level agreements.
  • Technology Integration: Leveraging technology to improve middle mile operations, such as transportation management systems (TMS), route optimization software, and other logistics tools.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensuring all operations comply with relevant regulations and safety standards. This includes overseeing the implementation of safety protocols and conducting regular audits.
  • Facilities: Collaboration with executive leadership to ensure proper facilities are chosen to ensure the successful integration of AIT's Middle Mile Network operation are included in the discussions - this is to include proper space allocation, yard management, and security needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED (Required)
  • Bachelor's Degree or commensurate verifiable work experience (Required)
  • Master's Degree with an emphasis in supply chain management (Preferred)

Experience

  • 15+ years Transportation and logistics with an emphasis on strategic planning and execution, transportation and logistics rate negotiations, and P&L responsibilities (Required)
  • 10+ years Progressive supervisory and management experience in transportation and logistics (Required)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong Analytical Acumen
  • Strong leadership skills - with experience managing employees across multiple locations
  • P&L Understanding and Responsibility - Proficiency with financial oversight and budgetary tracking to support strategic growth
  • Demonstrate effective and appropriate interpersonal relationships with directly and indirectly managed staff
  • Serves as the liaison between business clients and the analytics team in all phases of the solution development process
  • MS Office Suite
  • Logistics tracking software experience (example: AS400 & CargoWise)
