Job Description

WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY?

The Operational Risk Governance team is undertaking multiple complex enterprise-wide initiatives as part of RBC's ongoing plan to improve risk management controls and governance framework across the organization. In this role you will be responsible for strategically planning and managing successful implementation of risk mitigation strategies and compliance oversight.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

The role will coordinate, develop, lead, communicate, and execute activities to ensure operational risk objectives are accomplished on time, including:

  • Risk Assessment & Monitoring: Designing and implementing frameworks to identify, assess, and monitor operational risks across business units
  • Control Framework Development: Establishing and maintaining robust internal controls aligned with regulatory requirements and RBC's risk appetite
  • Governance Execution: Leading cross-functional teams to ensure adherence to operational risk policies and procedures
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring alignment with banking regulations (OSFI, FINTRAC, etc.) and internal governance standards
  • Incident Management: Coordinating response protocols and remediation strategies for operational risk events
  • Stakeholder Communication: Communicating risk insights and governance updates to senior management and business leaders

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED?

Must haves:

  • Deep Understanding of Regulatory & Compliance Framework
    • Comprehensive knowledge of banking regulations (OSFI, FINTRAC, Basel III, etc.) and ability to translate requirements into actionable governance policies
    • Familiarity with RBC's risk appetite statement and how to operationalize it across the organization
  • Strong Analytical & Risk Assessment Skills
    • Ability to identify, quantify, and prioritize operational risks across complex business environments
    • Proficiency in risk modeling, scenario analysis, and data-driven decision-making
  • Cross-Functional Leadership & Stakeholder Management
    • Capability to influence and coordinate across business units, compliance, audit, and executive leadership without direct authority
    • Excellent communication skills to translate complex risk concepts for diverse audiences (board-level to operational teams)
  • Control Design & Implementation Expertise
    • Experience designing, implementing, and testing internal control frameworks
    • Ability to balance risk mitigation with operational efficiency and business objectives
  • Change Management & Adaptability
    • Strong project management skills to execute enterprise-wide initiatives on schedule
    • Comfort operating in a dynamic regulatory environment and adjusting governance strategies as risks and regulations evolve
    • Resilience in managing competing priorities and stakeholder expectations

These competencies are critical for effectively managing operational risk governance in a large, regulated financial institution like RBC.

Nice-to-have:

  • Advanced Technology & Data Analytics Proficiency
    • Experience with risk management platforms, dashboards, and business intelligence tools
    • Familiarity with automation and AI-driven risk monitoring to enhance efficiency and real-time visibility
    • This strengthens the ability to scale governance processes and provide actionable insights at enterprise level
  • Industry-Specific Experience in Financial Services
    • Background in banking, insurance, or other regulated financial institutions
    • Understanding of RBC's specific business model, products, and inherent risk exposures
    • This accelerates onboarding and builds credibility with internal stakeholders
  • Certification or Advanced Credentials in Risk Management
    • Professional certifications such as FRM (Financial Risk Manager), CRMP (Certified Risk Management Professional), CRISC or equivalent
    • Advanced education in finance, risk management, or governance disciplines
    • These credentials demonstrate commitment to the field and provide structured frameworks for best practices in operational risk governance
