About the Role
The Director of Payment Operations continuously improves and executes the company's global payments strategy. The strategy covers processing, acquiring, payment methods, orchestration, authorization optimization, and day-to-day payment operations. You will own the performance, scalability, reliability, and economics of our payments ecosystem. You will work closely with Product, Engineering, Finance, Risk, Compliance, Legal, and Commercial teams so that payments support both customer experience and business growth.
What you'll be doing
- Execute the global payments strategy and roadmap, including processing, acquiring, payment methods, routing, and geographic expansion
- Manage relationships with acquirers, processors, gateways, PSPs, and card networks, including selection, onboarding, contracts, and SLAs
- Optimize multi-acquirer and multi-processor setups for redundancy, pricing, and global coverage
- Drive higher authorization and approval rates by analyzing declines, retries, cascading, tokenization, and account updater performance
- Develop intelligent routing strategies and run experimentation frameworks to measure the impact of changes
- Own payment economics (interchange, assessments, processor fees, cross-border costs), negotiate rates and terms, and build financial models to evaluate partner proposals
- Partner with Risk, Fraud, and Compliance to balance fraud prevention with approval rates, keep chargebacks within acceptable levels, and meet card-network rules
- Ensure stable, resilient payment operations, with clear processes for incidents, outages, settlement issues, and reconciliation breaks, plus automation and change-management controls
- Partner with Product and Engineering to define and deliver payment capabilities, and evaluate gateways, orchestration platforms, and alternative payment methods
- Lead and develop the payments team, report on performance, risks, and priorities to senior leadership, and represent the company with banks, networks, and strategic partners

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
