Job Overview

The Director Project Accounting role requires comprehensive Project Accounting, management, and business expertise. The Director Project Accounting leads through subordinate managers of managers, executes functional business plans, and contributes to the development of functional strategy. They direct the resolution of highly complex or unusual business problems that have implications beyond their function. The Director Project Accounting applies broad industry and commercial awareness to drive financial and operational performance and influence customer relationships.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly project lists, accounts receivable, revenue, project labor, and profitability reports for leadership and project staff, and any other project reporting and analysis on key project metrics as needed
  • Manage month-end revenue recognition and work in process reports
  • Oversee implementation of and adherence to a standard collections process and work closely with Partners in engaging external resources for collection matters
  • Assist project staff and project accounting team with resolving complex project setups and complex billing issues
  • Provide timely responses to client and vendor inquiries
  • Oversee and manage the billing schedule for timely invoicing to clients
  • Monitor and review all cash receipt transactions, resolve client credits from overpayments or retainer fees
  • Audit monthly project billings to project spending to look for large disparities before month-end close to ensure maximum revenue generation
  • Oversee the consultant payable process to ensure timely processing for each billing cycle and weekly check runs
  • Perform billing table maintenance and manage rate schedules as needed
  • Conduct meetings with project staff and the project accounting team to review key client accounts that have collection issues or project profitability issues to develop a strategy for improvement
  • Provide training to project staff related to billing and project profit management
  • Oversee implementation of changes to the ERP system to improve efficiency for the contract, billing, collection, and project reporting processes
  • Provide support and information as needed for marketing surveys, annual audits, and tax filings
  • Recruit, train, and motivate the project accounting team
  • Manage overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Project Accounting team
  • Perform these supervisory responsibilities per the Company policies, procedures, and applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations
  • Interview and hire, plan, assign, and direct work
  • Reward and discipline employees, complete performance reviews, address complaints and resolve problems
  • Identify issues, research root cause analysis, and propose changes to existing processes that could add value to the business and organization
  • Ask questions when the direction is unclear to increase general understanding
  • Show initiative by being proactive and taking prompt action to accomplish objectives
  • Participate as an active and contributing member of a team to achieve team goals and work cooperatively with other team members
  • Own and lead the implementation, enforcement, and verification of compliance with all McDermott policies and procedures
  • Ensure employees understand their responsibility and authority to effectively implement the requirements of all McDermott policies and procedures
  • Ensure the timely completion of all mandatory training by themselves and their teams

Essential Qualifications and Education

  • 15+ years of experience, ideally in the oil and gas, EPCI, or construction industry
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance and Accounting required and relevant certification, such as Chartered Accountant, ACCA, CPA, etc.)
  • Experience with project implementations with good documentation skills
  • Experience with project-based organizations preferred
  • Ability to work in a team environment, learn quickly, plan and prioritize tasks effectively to meet deadlines
  • Strong leadership skills demonstrated by the ability to delegate responsibility, work with others, and coach them to develop their capabilities
  • Possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Organized, accurate, and detail-oriented
  • Proven advanced technical skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI, Oracle, OneStream)
