HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world. Guided by our purpose of opening up a world of opportunity, our ambition is to become the world’s most trusted bank globally, putting customers at the heart of everything we do.

The Opportunity

As Director, Regional Head of Energy and Materials, UK and Europe within Global Trade Solutions (GTS), you’ll set the regional sector strategy for a priority industry group across one of HSBC’s key markets. You’ll combine deep structuring capability with market insight to deliver sustainable revenue and asset growth, profitability, and enhanced competitive advantage for the Energy and Materials portfolio. Working closely with regional GTS teams and Energy and Materials colleagues across the Americas, Asia, and the Middle East, you’ll help connect the network around complex client needs and replicate solutions across markets. The role spans traditional and structured trade solutions including receivables and payables financing, structured trade loans, and SBLCs and Guarantees. Success means deeper strategic client relationships, stronger sector penetration, and consistently strong risk outcomes across multi-geography, multi-product transactions. You’ll report to the Head of GTS Sales UK with a functional reporting line to the Global Head of Energy and Materials, GTS.

What you'll be doing

  • Define and execute the UK and Europe trade finance growth strategy for the Energy and Materials sector in line with GTS strategy
  • Structure large and complex trade finance transactions across receivables, payables, structured trade loans, and SBLCs and Guarantees
  • Assess client and deal risk dynamics and embed appropriate risk mitigants to deliver sustainable and risk acceptable structures
  • Shape and deliver sector-specific solutions aligned to evolving working capital needs and trade flows across commodity supply chains
  • Build and deepen senior client relationships across key Energy and Materials clients including C-suite, Treasurers, and procurement decision makers
  • Partner with portfolio management and distribution teams to set distribution strategy, support sell-down activity, and improve balance sheet velocity
  • Represent HSBC at industry events, trade forums, and client roundtables to strengthen market presence and sector insight
  • Develop and manage a specialised Energy and Materials sales team with clear performance measures, development plans, and succession focus

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
