We’re recruiting a Head of Responsible Artificial Intelligence (Risk and Controls) to lead HSBC UK’s Responsible AI agenda within Business Risk & Resilience. This is a senior risk leadership role, setting the risk and controls strategy, governance and oversight to ensure AI (including GenAI) is designed, deployed and operated in line with UK regulatory expectations and HSBC UK’s risk appetite. In this role you will: Define AI risk and control expectations by establishing minimum control standards and monitoring thresholds for AI/GenAI use cases, including customer-facing and material decisioning. Lead AI risk and control governance and decision forums, ensuring clear decision rights, consistent outcomes across business lines, and effective escalation routes. Provide advice on risk and controls across the AI lifecycle, covering intake, data suitability, development, validation, deployment, monitoring, change management and decommissioning. Drive UK regulatory readiness, translating supervisory expectations into practical requirements and evidence (e.g., FCA/PRA expectations on governance, model risk, operational resilience, consumer outcomes and third-party risk). Strengthen operational resilience for AI services, including impact tolerances, dependency mapping, testing and recoverability; lead response to AI-related incidents and ensure sustainable remediation. Set third-party and supply chain assurance requirements for vendor AI solutions (transparency, auditability, data rights, security and exit plans) and oversee ongoing monitoring. Deliver MI, reporting and assurance to senior risk committees on AI inventory, materiality, KRIs/KPIs, issues, incidents and remediation progress; support Internal Audit and regulatory reviews. Build capability and culture, developing a high-performing team and embedding training, playbooks and communities of practice to enable responsible innovation. To be successful in this role, you should meet the following requirements: Senior leadership experience in risk, governance, assurance or control design for AI/analytics in a regulated environment. Strong understanding of AI/GenAI risk domains, including fairness/bias, explainability, privacy, security, data governance, model risk, conduct/consumer outcomes and operational resilience. Proven ability to build strong networks and influence effectively in a complex matrix organisation. Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and persuasively to non-technical senior audiences. Demonstrable people leadership capability, including leading and developing teams. A dynamic, positive approach to a fast-evolving risk landscape and changing regulatory expectations related to AI. Opening up a world of opportunity Continue to grow with our internal opportunities.
