Freelance SEO Director (AI Search & Generative Engine Optimisation)

The Opportunity
We're partnering with a leading marketing and advertising agency to hire a Freelance SEO Director for an initial 2-3 month engagement. This is a senior, client-facing role that will suit somebody who combines strategic SEO leadership with hands-on delivery experience. You'll play a key role in helping clients navigate the rapidly evolving search landscape, with a particular focus on AI Search and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO).
Working closely with internal teams and external stakeholders, you'll lead SEO and GEO initiatives, analyse performance, identify opportunities, and implement best practice recommendations that drive measurable impact.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead client-facing SEO and GEO workstreams across multiple accounts.
- Design, manage and evaluate SEO and GEO experiments.
- Conduct impact analysis and provide actionable recommendations based on findings.
- Deliver regular performance reporting and communicate results to clients and internal stakeholders.
- Identify opportunities for content optimisation to improve visibility across traditional and AI-driven search environments.
- Provide strategic recommendations to support organic growth initiatives.
- Implement SEO and GEO best practices within CMS platforms.
- Collaborate with content, strategy and digital teams to ensure recommendations are executed effectively.
- Stay ahead of developments in AI search, large language models and emerging search technologies.

Key Requirements
- Extensive SEO experience gained within a marketing, media, digital or advertising agency environment.
- Proven experience in a client-facing consultancy or leadership role.
- Strong understanding of modern SEO principles including technical SEO, content strategy and performance measurement.
- Demonstrable expertise in AI Search and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO).
- Experience analysing the impact of SEO and GEO initiatives and presenting findings to stakeholders.
- Strong reporting, analytical and data interpretation skills.
- Experience implementing SEO recommendations within CMS platforms.
- Comfortable operating at both strategic and hands-on levels.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
