We're looking for an exceptional leader to help grow our Water Resources & Hydrogeology business. If you’re an established name in the industry, this is your chance to lead major projects, help shape the direction of the UK’s water sector, and work with a great team on some of the biggest environmental challenges out there.
Who Are We?
Groundwater Science is a specialist hydrogeological and environmental consultancy. In recent years, we’ve worked on projects in West Africa, the Caribbean, South Asia, and the UK. We’re known for our innovative approach, frequently developing tools and approaches that are later adopted by the wider community.
We take the technical side seriously, but not at the expense of being a fun, supportive place to work. We’re spread across Shrewsbury, London, High Wycombe, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, but that doesn’t stop us getting together regularly, both for work and for fun. Recent company socials have included climbing Goatfell and attending a Hunger Games matinee.
The Opportunity
As Director of UK Water Resources & Hydrogeology, you’ll lead one of our core business areas, combining commercial thinking with technical expertise. You’ll help shape our strategy, build client relationships, lead major projects, and mentor junior staff. You'll maintain high technical standards, while bringing fresh thinking to help us stay ahead of the curve. Your role will include:

Strategic Leadership
- Developing and delivering the long-term vision for our Water Resources & Hydrogeology business
- Identifying emerging market opportunities and positioning the business for future growth
- Contributing to company-wide strategy and sustainable business development
Technical Leadership for Water Resources Projects
- Numerical groundwater modelling (MODFLOW, FEFLOW, or equivalent)
- Groundwater resource assessments
- Drought resilience and climate adaptation
- Environmental permitting and abstraction licensing
- Catchment management
- Water Resources Management Plans (WRMPs)
- Environmental Destination
Client & Business Development
You'll lead strategic bids and framework submissions, bring in new work, and develop long-term partnerships with key stakeholders, including:
- UK water companies
- Environment Agency
- Natural Resources Wales
- Scottish Environment Protection Agency
- Ofwat
- DEFRA
- Infrastructure, energy, and industrial clients
Commercial Leadership
You'll take ownership of the commercial performance of the business by:
- Delivering profitable project portfolios
- Managing revenue, utilisation, and margins
- Supporting contract negotiations
- Assisting with resource planning and forecasting
- Managing commercial risk

About You
We're looking for an established hydrogeologist in the UK water sector – someone with the credibility and technical depth to influence clients and drive projects forward.
You’ll need:
- Degree in Hydrogeology, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related discipline
- Proven track record delivering major projects for UK water companies and regulators
- Strong commercial and business development experience
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
- Experience of reviewing technical work and leading teams
Nice to have, but not dealbreakers:
- MSc or PhD in Hydrogeology, Water Resources, or a related discipline
- Chartered status (CGeol, CSci, C.WEM, or equivalent)
