Directors & Officers Insurance Apprenticeship Programme
Start Your Career in the Heart of the International Insurance Market
Ready to earn, learn and launch your career? This is more than your first job. You’ll gain real experience, work towards a recognised qualification and build skills that will shape your future.
Our Wholesale team helps insurance brokers across Israel, Poland, Ireland and the Middle East find specialist cover for clients with complex and international risks. By connecting these brokers with Lloyd's of London and wider global insurance markets, we help negotiate the right coverage, terms and pricing.
You'll gain experience across Directors & Officers (D&O) insurance, which protects company leaders, and Financial Institutions (FI) insurance, which protects organisations such as banks, investment firms and fund managers. You'll work with businesses across technology, renewable energy, logistics, oil and more.
You’ll join Howden on a permanent role and complete an 18-month development programme designed to develop your technical knowledge, professional skills and confidence to kick start your career.
What you’ll be doing?
You will begin with a structured induction before joining our D&O Wholesale team, where you will work alongside experienced colleagues and gradually take on more responsibility.
During the programme, you'll:
- Build your understanding of D&O and Financial Institutions insurance and how wholesale broking works.
- Support the team in preparing and sending insurance submissions to insurers.
- Help create insurance slips, which record key details of the risk, cover and terms being offered.
- Attend meetings with underwriters, insurers, brokers and clients to learn how relationships and negotiations are managed.
- Support the team in reviewing insurers' responses and sharing information with brokers and clients.
- Process invoices and provide accurate administrative support throughout the insurance placement process.
- Work with numerical information and complete tasks accurately in a fast-moving environment.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
