Description:
Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Permanent
Join a team that helps some of Leicester's most vulnerable residents access vital financial support when they need it most. As a Discretionary Awards Assistant, you will play an important role in delivering our local welfare schemes, supporting people facing financial hardship with a person-centred, needs-based and trauma-informed approach. You will look beyond the immediate crisis to understand individual circumstances, provide compassionate support, and help connect residents to the wider services and assistance available to them.
Based in the Council's Welfare and Advice Service, part of Revenues and Benefits, the role is delivered as part of a no wrong door approach. You will ensure people receive the right support at the right time, helping individuals and households build greater financial stability and resilience. The team works on a hybrid basis with the expectation that you work from City Hall at least two days per week following a successful probation period. The core working hours for this role are Monday to Thursday, from 8:30am until 5pm and 8:30am until 4:30pm on a Friday. A Basic DBS check is required.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Help residents apply for discretionary financial support by handling enquiries, assessing applications, and making decisions based on the evidence provided.
- Gather and verify information, identify potential fraud or errors, record accurate information on council systems, and communicate decisions clearly and sensitively.
- Provide advice and signposting to welfare benefits and other sources of support, working closely with colleagues, partners, and suppliers to ensure vulnerable households receive the right help at the right time.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
