Job Introduction
Are you looking for a role where you can use your trade knowledge and skills to make a genuine difference to people’s lives?
We are looking for a DIY Skills Adviser to support our clients in London, where you will play a pivotal community-based role in assisting and upskilling the communities we serve.
About The Role
You will be providing practical support, such as painting, tiling, decorating, gardening and basic DIY skills. Supporting clients to develop their DIY skills, basic home repairs and advising on health and safety in the home will also be key parts of the role. You will keep records of all work done and manage client records and impact, advise on and manage the purchasing of equipment, as well as promoting the DIY Service both internally and externally to Shelter.
About You
You will have experience and knowledge of DIY, gardening, general Handy Person work, and decorating, along with a good understanding of the challenges experienced by people who have been homeless. Comfortable with frequent lone working in clients’ homes, you are adaptable, diplomatic and can set boundaries and share your knowledge effectively. You will also need a full driving licence suitable for driving a DIYSA vehicle and have up to date knowledge of Health and Safety.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
