DMPK - Industrial Placement 12 Months
Oxford, UK
Vertex is a global biotechnology company that aims to discover, develop and commercialize innovative new medicines so people with serious diseases can lead better lives. Founded in 1989 in Cambridge, MA, Vertex today has research and development sites and commercial offices around the world in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia.
Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) is a multidisciplinary group within Vertex. DMPK plays a critical role in the prediction of human pharmacokinetic profiles in order to determine whether candidate molecules are suitable to progress to clinical development. DMPK provides support from early discovery to late-development programs.
We are recruiting for an Industrial placement student in the DMPK Department, at our research facility in Oxfordshire, as part of our wider intern intake for the year.
Main Duties & Objectives
The research site is a dynamic, fast-paced environment, where you will be embedded within research teams working on any one of several diseases. You will be working in a close-knit, multidisciplinary team of scientists, located in our research laboratories, where you can expect to gain a broad understanding of the drug discovery process. As part of your time here you can expect to gain experience in DMPK in-vitro assays and their application to prediction of pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism, and enzymology, and assay development and optimization.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
