Domestic Assistant
Location Harplands Hospital, Hilton Road, Stoke on Trent, ST4 6RR
Hours 30 hours per week – 5 days over 7, including weekends
Salary £25,272.00 per annum plus Serco benefits
Main Purpose
Responsible for providing high-quality cleaning, catering, and general support services to ward-based teams, ensuring a pleasant and homely environment for patients.
Main Accountabilities
- Clean and maintain work areas efficiently while adhering to work schedules, ensuring a safe environment for all.
- Follow best-practice cleaning and infection control procedures.
- Ensure proper use and maintenance of cleaning equipment, including pre-use inspections for faults.
- Set tables and deliver three main meals per day, plus any required snacks/drinks, following food safety guidelines.
- Check temperatures of meals before serving.
- Maintain good communication with patients, visitors, staff, and colleagues ( listening, talking, reading).
- Perform additional duties as required with appropriate training.
- Comply with Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, ensuring:
- Reporting hazards.
- Taking reasonable care for the safety of yourself, patients, staff, and visitors.
- Avoiding intentional or reckless actions that undermine safety, health, or sustainability.
- Follow fire safety procedures and ward-based team instructions.

Essential Skills & Qualities
To excel in this role, you should have:
- A good standard of general education, with strong reading, writing, and numeracy skills.
- Experience in customer-focused environments and cleanliness maintenance.
- Common sense, initiative, and adaptability.
- Excellent communication skills and empathy for patients and teams.
- Trustworthiness, reliability, resilience (ability to handle stressful situations calmly).
- Capability to work effectively in a team-oriented, flexible environment.
Desirable (Not Essential)
- NVQ Level 1 or 2 in cleaning building interiors.
- Basic Health and Safety or Food Hygiene certificate.
- Aware of cleaning protocols and food hygiene standards.
- Previous experience in a hospital setting.
- Modesty, resilience, and broad life experience in caring roles.
