Downstream Scientist - 12 Month Contract
PE Global is currently recruiting for a Downstream Scientist for a 12-month contract role with a leading multinational Animal Health client based in Speke.
The pay rate is between £15.38 and £20.51 per hour.
Focusing on biopharmaceutical and vaccine products, you will bridge laboratory-scale experimentation with pilot plant delivery. This role is ideal for an early-career scientist with downstream purification experience who is ready to take technical ownership of processes while working under the strategic guidance of Senior Downstream Scientists.
Job Responsibilities
- Experimental Design & Delivery: Plan and execute laboratory and pilot-scale studies through hands-on experimentation. Deliver downstream purification processes to support clinical programs and business milestones as per project frameworks.
- Data-Driven Decision Making: Utilise statistical tools (e.g., Design of Experiments/DoE) to design, analyse, and interpret complex data sets. Make sound technical judgements to steer project direction and ensure robust process delivery.
- Downstream Expertise: Provide technical and operational expertise in downstream processing (e.g., chromatography, filtration, centrifugation) within development laboratories and pilot plant environments.
- Technical Reporting: Author high-quality technical reports and documentation in a timely manner, ensuring process knowledge is captured and transferable.
- Quality & Safety (GxP): Maintain a high standard of GxP compliance during experimental execution and documentation. Support internal safety standards and adhere to established Safe Systems of Work (SSoW).
- Housekeeping & Monitoring: Actively support and monitor laboratory housekeeping to maintain a high-standard working environment.
- Equipment Coordination: Support the maintenance and readiness of downstream laboratory equipment. Assist in the management of maintenance schedules and act as a point of liaison for facilities management and service providers.
- Communication: Provide regular and clear updates on project progress to project leads, technical staff, and relevant stakeholders.
- Knowledge Sharing: Support continuous improvement by sharing technical observations across the Speke team and contributing to network-wide innovation initiatives.
- Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other team members to ensure work is delivered according to agreed timelines and technical standards.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
