12 weeks contract with a Local Authority

Umbrella - £17.68 per hour - Umbrella

Job Purpose

As a Driver/General Operative, you will carry out street cleansing and environmental maintenance duties across Newport while driving Council vehicles when required. You will help maintain a clean, safe, and pleasant environment for residents and visitors by completing cleansing routes and supporting waste management operations.

Key Duties/Accountabilities

  • Carry out daily street cleansing duties in accordance with route schedules.
  • Drive Council vehicles safely and in accordance with Driver Handbook requirements.
  • Undertake environmental cleansing and waste management activities.
  • Remove litter and maintain public spaces to agreed standards.
  • Comply with all Health & Safety procedures and wear appropriate PPE.
  • Report accidents, defects, faults, hazards, and incidents.
  • Assist and supervise Cleansing Operatives when working together.
  • Complete all assigned cleansing and driving tasks within required deadlines.
  • Attend mandatory training courses when required.
  • Provide excellent customer service when interacting with members of the public.
  • Work as part of a team to maintain environmental standards across Newport.

Essential Experience Required

  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Experience driving work vehicles.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to undertake physically demanding duties involving:
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to meet targets and work to schedules.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Understanding of working within a public service environment.

Additional Information to Note

  • Working hours: 37 hours per week.
  • Location: Telford Street, Newport, NP19 0ES.
  • Shift Pattern:
    • Monday to Thursday: 07:30 – 15:30
    • Friday: 07:30 – 15:00
  • May be required to work weekends, Bank Holidays, and Extra Statutory Days.
  • Full UK Driving Licence required.
  • In-person interview at Telford Depot.
  • Interview Date: 22nd September 2026.
  • Supplier submission deadline: 18th September 2026.
  • We work on bi-weekly payment schedule.
