Job Description

Design and Technology Technician (part time – 14 hours per week)

Scale D Point 3-4 (starting salary £8070.01pa pay award pending)

Responsible for This position has no responsibility for line management

Job Purpose

To support the school by providing a technician support service in the D & T Department to all staff and students, meeting health and safety standards and the requirements of classes involved.

Duties & Responsibilities

The current main areas of responsibility are as follows but all staff within school are expected to show flexibility in the reviewing of responsibilities to meet the school’s needs, which may change from time to time.

  • Assist with preparation of materials/resources for lessons, activities, demonstration, and exams as instructed
  • Be responsible for sharpening tools; chisels, planes, lathe tools, and drills
  • Be able to give technical advice to staff and students
  • Instruct students on the use of specialist equipment and assist them with the operation of such equipment
  • Assist students in the selection and collection of materials
  • Assist staff with student supervision during practical work
  • Assist the Head of Technology in the setting of materials and equipment in the event of staff absences

To ensure the maintenance of a healthy and safe working environment by:

  • Maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly working environment
  • Being responsible for the H & S in storing tools, equipment, and materials safely
  • Inspecting furnishings, machinery, and equipment to ensure they are in good order and safe to use and reporting the need for major repair or servicing as necessary
  • Ensuring the safe treatment and disposal of used materials including hazardous substances and responding to actual or potential hazards
  • Keeping up to date with any changes to the requirements for COSHH and Health & Safety within the department

General:

  • Oversee the circulation of stock and equipment, monitoring stock levels, and ordering as appropriate
  • Maintain records and requirements for tools, equipment, etc.
  • To support the administration of the department, e.g., record keeping, photocopying
  • To ensure the routine and non-routine checking, cleaning, maintenance, calibration, testing, and repairing of equipment to the required standard
  • There will be break and lunchtime supervision and afterschool activities as part of this role and a willingness to undertake First Aid training as required.
  • Have due regard for safeguarding and welfare of children and young people and to follow the child protection procedures adopted by the Trust
  • Participate in the school’s appraisal process.
  • The post holder will be responsible for their own health and safety. All duties and responsibilities must be carried out in line with the specific requirements detailed in the MAT Health and Safety policies.
  • Due to changing customer demands, duties and responsibilities are likely to vary from time to time and the school therefore retains the right to amend job descriptions to reflect changing requirements.
  • Perform any other reasonable tasks within the range of the salary grade
