Duty Security Manager – Campus Experience & Security – Days (5/7)

Salary range: £34,827 rising to £38,377 per annum.

Location: Bloomsbury, Central London WC1E

Shift pattern: 5 shifts across 7 days, including weekends. Shifts operate on a rotating basis between morning and evening patterns, covering core service hours between 07:00 and 23:00. There may also be occasional opportunities to work compressed shifts, subject to operational requirements.

About the Role

Join Birkbeck, University of London as Duty Security Manager (Campus Experience & Security – Days) and play a key role in creating a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for our diverse campus community. This role is offered on a permanent, full-time contract. Shifts operate on a 5 shifts across 7 days pattern, including weekends. Shifts operate on a rotating basis between morning and evening patterns, covering core service hours between 07:00 and 23:00.

As Duty Manager (Campus Experience & Security – Day), you will lead the day-to-day delivery of campus security operations, helping to create a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. You will provide visible leadership to the daytime security team, ensuring high standards of service, professionalism, and operational performance.

Responsibilities

  • Manage rotas and staffing
  • Oversee control room operations
  • Coordinate incident response
  • Support the safe delivery of campus events
  • Work closely with the Facilities Manager (Campus Experience & Security) to contribute to service improvements, staff development, and compliance with security, health and safety, and data protection requirements
  • Support the implementation of Martyn’s Law (Terrorism Protection of Premises Act 2025)

Requirements

  • Experience supervising or leading a security team
  • Experience responding to incidents and coordinating emergency situations
  • Knowledge of security operations, risk assessment, and compliance requirements
  • Confidence using CCTV, access control, and incident reporting systems
  • Strong communication skills and a customer-focused approach
  • The ability to remain calm under pressure and make sound decisions
  • A current SIA Door Supervisor and CCTV licence, or willingness to obtain one

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary: £34,827 rising to £38,377 per annum, Grade 5 on the College’s London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated London Weighting Allowance of 7.5%
