Role Description

The Dyslexia Specialist School Shadow role is a part-time, on-site position based in London. The specialist will support a student with dyslexia in a mainstream school setting, helping them access the curriculum, stay organized, and use appropriate learning strategies. Daily tasks include:

The role also involves collaborating with classroom teachers, communicating with families as required, and adapting support based on the student’s evolving needs and school environment. The specialist is expected to maintain clear records of progress and challenges, providing practical feedback to the wider support team.

Qualifications

  • Specialist knowledge of dyslexia, including evidence-based strategies for literacy support, classroom accommodations, and assistive technology use.
  • Experience working with children in school settings, ideally in special education, learning support, or as a teaching assistant.
  • Strong skills in observation, documentation, and communication to collaborate effectively with teachers, parents, and other professionals.
  • Ability to build trusting, encouraging relationships with students, demonstrating patience, empathy, and positive behavior support.
  • Understanding of safeguarding practices in schools, including current DBS clearance or willingness to obtain it.
  • Relevant training or qualification in education, special educational needs, psychology, or a related field (e.g., SEN teaching certificate or dyslexia training) is highly beneficial.
  • Reliability, professionalism, and discretion when working with families and schools, with readiness to follow Firefly Education London policies and procedures.
