Job Description

The job requires an accessible and responsive team member with clinical responsibility for ENT patients.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist will be expected to make informed decisions within their own area and scope of professional practice to ensure agreed standards, objectives are met.

The post holder will take a shared role in the clinical assessment and treatment of ENT patients in surgical inpatient and outpatient settings.

The successful candidate will form part of the ENT ward round team and be responsible for reviewing/assessing patients, who will be a mix of acutely unwell and elective pathway and for their ongoing management. The CNS will be required at times to work autonomously and aid in clinical diagnosis and treatment plans, working closely with senior medical and nursing staff. This will progress to involvement in reviewing patients in clinic.

To liaise with all key members of the multidisciplinary team to advice and support colleagues in the delivery of specialised patient care across professional boundaries.

To undertake nurse led clinics and various nurse led services, ensuring excellent standards of nursing care to patients through the planning, co-ordinating, delivery and evaluation of clinics.

To work autonomously to deliver specialist clinical care appropriate to the needs of the patient group and service based on principles that are research based and which enhance the quality of patient care.

Responsibilities

• Managing and assessing a specialist caseload of ENT patients, planning, implementing, and evaluating care.
• Undertaking clinical assessments, identifying complications early, and initiating appropriate treatment plans.
• Acting as a key member of the ENT multidisciplinary team, coordinating care pathways and referrals between ENT services, Surgical Admissions Unit (SAU), and other specialties.
• Providing specialist advice, support, and education to patients, carers, and healthcare professionals.
• Supporting the development and implementation of clinical policies, service improvements, and governance initiatives within the specialty.
• Acting as a clinical leader and resource for staff, promoting best practice and ensuring compliance with Trust policies and national guidelines.
• Developing and mentoring staff through teaching, supervision, appraisal.
• Maintaining advanced clinical skills, including patient monitoring, equipment management, and specialist procedures.
• Using electronic systems effectively to ensure accurate and timely patient and service data management.
• Supporting patients and families through complex and challenging situations, including the delivery of sensitive information.
• Promoting and maintaining high standards of health and safety, cleanliness, infection prevention, and patient experience.
• Participating in continuous professional development and quality improvement programmes, including the Trust's UHCW Improvement (UHCWi) system and associated training.
