Job Description: Nursery Assistant
About the Role
To supervise and observe children, provide the appropriate activities for their age and stage of development, to write observations, follow the Early Years Foundation Stage policy and procedure, and to promote children's learning and development.
Responsibilities
- Work within the guidelines of Playaway Day Nursery’s policies and procedures; have knowledge of safeguarding and health and safety.
- Knowledge of the EYFS. To contribute to a programme of activities suitable to the age range of children in your area in conjunction with other staff. To prepare and complete activities to suit each child’s stage of development.
- Implement the Equality and Diversity Policy. To include having cultural awareness, encouraging diversity and celebrating festivals. Enabling children to feel valued and treating each child as an individual.
- Provide and sustain a stimulating, challenging, welcoming and safe environment. You should be a good role model, have a warm, friendly and patient personality and be caring and sensitive to children’s needs.
- Form a partnership with parents. Acknowledging and respecting the importance that parents/carers have in a child’s learning. Parents must be involved in all aspects of their child’s education, all information must be shared and lines of communication are open at all times.
- Be professional. This means building trusting relationships with children, parents and staff. You should demonstrate good listening skills, be open-minded and understanding. Above all, confidentiality is paramount.
- Work as part of a team providing quality care and education. To be aware of your own skills and share knowledge with your colleagues. Carry out your duties in line with the rest of the team and follow instructions from the Manager. To attend staff meetings.
- Promote the physical, social, emotional, cultural, spiritual, moral and cognitive development of each individual child.
- Carry out the procedures for the daily routine. This includes demonstrating high levels of hygiene. Cleaning food preparation areas, bottles, sinks, toilets, toys and equipment. Laundering flannels, towels, bed/cot sheets, painting overalls, bibs etc.
- Adhere to the Health & Safety Policy. To include awareness of the fire procedure, risk assessments, keeping children safe and awareness of first aid procedures.
- Adhere to strict personal hygiene rules. To include regular hand washing, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), i.e. disposable gloves and aprons when appropriate, to wear uniform i.e. tabards at all times.
- Be aware of the correct manual handling techniques. To include reading the Manual Handling Policy, using the stepladder when appropriate and wearing the correct clothing to minimise risk.
- Check toys/equipment to ensure they are safe to be used by children, checking outside garden is clean and safe. Report and record accidents in the Accident Book.
- Be a dedicated and reliable member of staff. To show commitment to your position as laid out in this job description. To complete all tasks to the best of your ability. To read the Staff Information Pack and follow its policies and procedures.

Course Contents
- Recognise when a child or a colleague is in danger or at risk of abuse and act to protect them in line with safeguarding policy and procedure.
- Apply legislation, policy and procedure to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of children in the setting (for example, food safety, diets, starting solid food, allergies, COSHH, and accidents, injuries, and emergencies).
- Apply the principles of risk assessment and risk management within documentation and practice.
- Teach children to develop skills to manage risk and maintain their own and others safety.
- Use a range of communication methods, including technology, with other professionals to meet the individual needs of the child.
- Develop and maintain effective professional, collaborative relationships with others involved in the education and care of the child.
- Undertake the role and responsibilities of key person.
- Recognise and apply theories of attachment to develop effective relationships with children.
- Provide sensitive and respectful personal care for children from birth to 5 years.
- Advocate for all children’s needs, including children which require SEND or EAL support.
- Promote and facilitate children’s interpersonal communication to develop their social interactions and relationships.
- Support children to develop a positive sense of their own identity and culture.
- Support children to understand and respond to their emotions and make considered choices about their behaviours.
- Assess the responsiveness of the environment for effective child-centred experiences in line with curriculum requirements.
- Create inclusive, child-centred, dynamic, innovative, and evolving physical environments both indoors and outdoors.
- Create inclusive and supportive emotional environment that enables the child to feel safe, secure, respected and experience a sense of wellbeing; maintaining and prioritising the individual child’s voice.
- Apply strategies that support children’s ability to manage change, transition, and significant events.
- Analyse observation evidence to assess and plan holistic individual learning based on a comprehensive understanding of the child’s needs and interests.
- Facilitate and support child-centred opportunities and experiences based on the setting's curriculum and pedagogy.
- Provide adult led opportunities and experience based on the setting's curriculum and pedagogy.
- Use reflection to develop themselves both professionally and personally.

Training Schedule
Training is delivered by LMP Education remotely which includes 1:1 sessions with your tutor.
Essential Qualifications
- GCSE in:
- English (grade 4-9)
- Maths (grade 4-9)
Desirable Qualifications
- A Level in:
- Early years (grade Level 2)
