We are looking for a friendly, caring Early Years Apprentice to join our team at Radbrook Nursery and Pre-School. We are a small setting with a baby room for under 2s and a pre-school room for ages 2-4. You will work with our pre-school team, supporting children’s learning, development and activities.
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
The role involves working closely with children, parents, carers and professionals to promote the well-being, development and individual needs of each child. It requires being a positive and supportive member of the staff team, showing genuine care and respect for children and their families, and helping to ensure the nursery runs smoothly each day. The role also involves supporting the key person through observations, planning and maintaining children’s files, learning from senior staff, assisting with activities and daily duties, and using initiative when needed. All responsibilities should be carried out in line with the nursery’s policies and procedures and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework, ensuring children receive a safe, nurturing and stimulating learning experience.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Supporting children's learning and development through play-based activities
- Assisting with the planning and delivery of age-appropriate learning experiences
- Observing, monitoring and recording children's progress and achievements
- Promoting children's physical, emotional, social and intellectual development
- Supporting children's communication, language and literacy development
- Encouraging positive behaviour and helping children develop social skills
- Ensuring the safety, wellbeing and safeguarding of all children at all times
- Following health and safety policies, including risk assessments and accident reporting
- Assisting with personal care routines, including toileting, handwashing and mealtimes, where appropriate
- Building positive and professional relationships with children, parents/carers and colleagues
- Supporting children with additional needs and helping to promote an inclusive environment
- Preparing learning resources and maintaining stimulating, safe learning spaces
- Contributing to daily nursery, preschool or classroom routines
- Maintaining accurate records in line with setting policies and statutory requirements
- Working as part of the wider early years team and attending training and development activities
- Following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and organisational policies and procedures

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Recognise when a child or a colleague is in danger or at risk of abuse and act to protect them in line with safeguarding policy and procedure.
- Apply legislation, policy and procedure to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of children in the setting (for example, food safety, diets, starting solid food, allergies, COSHH, and accidents, injuries, and emergencies).
- Apply the principles of risk assessment and risk management within documentation and practice.
- Teach children to develop skills to manage risk and maintain their own and others safety.
- Use a range of communication methods, including technology, with other professionals to meet the individual needs of the child.
- Develop and maintain effective professional, collaborative relationships with others involved in the education and care of the child.
- Undertake the role and responsibilities of key person.
- Recognise and apply theories of attachment to develop effective relationships with children.
- Provide sensitive and respectful personal care for children from birth to 5 years.
- Advocate for all children’s needs, including children which require SEND or EAL support.
- Promote and facilitate children’s interpersonal communication to develop their social interactions and relationships.
- Support children to develop a positive sense of their own identity and culture.
- Support children to understand and respond to their emotions and make considered choices about their behaviours.
- Assess the responsiveness of the environment for effective child-centred experiences in line with curriculum requirements.
- Create inclusive, child-centred, dynamic, innovative, and evolving physical environments both indoors and outdoors.
- Create inclusive and supportive emotional environment that enables the child to feel safe, secure, respected and experience a sense of wellbeing; maintaining and prioritising the individual child’s voice.
- Apply strategies that support children’s ability to manage change, transition, and significant events.
- Analyse observation evidence to assess and plan holistic individual learning based on a comprehensive understanding of the child’s needs and interests.
- Facilitate and support child-centred opportunities and experiences based on the setting's curriculum and pedagogy.
- Provide adult led opportunities and experience based on the setting's curriculum and pedagogy.
- Use reflection to develop themselves both professionally and personally.

Training schedule
Early Years Educator Level 3
Training will include paediatric first aid qualification
You will be required to attend college one day in every three weeks for day release, with the remainder of the contracted hours being based in the workplace setting. You will attend the Shrewsbury College, London Road Campus for your taught input with remote engagement on the corresponding weeks.
Essential qualifications
- GCSE in:
- Maths and English (grade C / 4 or above)

Passing a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
