Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) – Contract
Highlands, Scotland | Renewable Energy / Construction
We're working with a business delivering major renewable energy infrastructure in the Highlands, who are looking to bring in an experienced Ecological Clerk of Works to support the construction phase of an active project.
The Role
As ECoW, you'll act as the primary ecological advisor to the construction team — providing on-site oversight, monitoring compliance with environmental legislation and planning conditions, and ensuring mitigation measures for habitats and protected species are implemented correctly throughout the build.
The Offer
A competitive day rate outside IR35, reflective of experience and sector demand, on a 6 month contract basis (possible extension beyond) supporting a live construction programme in the Highlands.

Key Responsibilities
- Monitor construction activities for compliance with ecological legislation, planning conditions, permits, licences and method statements
- Supervise works within or adjacent to sensitive ecological areas, including vegetation clearance, earthworks and habitat management activities
- Assess and manage ecological risk relating to protected species — including bats, breeding birds, badgers, reptiles, great crested newts, otters and water voles
- Provide toolbox talks and site briefings, advising teams on ecological constraints and best practice
- Maintain detailed site records, inspection reports and photographic evidence, and produce visit reports on findings and actions
- Liaise with project managers, contractors and other environmental/engineering disciplines to ensure compliance across the site

What We're Looking For
- Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Conservation Biology or a related discipline
- CIEEM membership (Associate, Full or Chartered)
- Full UK driving licence and CSCS card (or equivalent)
- Demonstrable ECoW experience on construction, infrastructure, utilities or civil engineering projects
- Strong working knowledge of UK wildlife legislation and protected species mitigation
- Experience within highways, rail, energy, water, utilities or renewable energy sectors is desirable
- Chartered Ecologist (CEcol) status, protected species survey licences, SMSTS/SSSTS or First Aid at Work are all a plus
