I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

PBE’s mission is to end low personal wellbeing in the UK. We do this by helping charities and social enterprises understand their economic and social impact, so they can improve their overall effectiveness. We enable professional economists from the private and public sectors as well as academia to volunteer their skills to tackle some of the most pressing issues in society. We have worked with over 600 charities since our inception in 2009.
Alongside our connection with the social sector, our key research areas of interest include children and young people’s mental health, loneliness, households in financial distress, and arts and culture.

- Thorough understanding of the principles and methods of economic appraisal and evaluation, with hands-on experience in their practical application

- Strong stakeholder management skills and problem-solving skills
- An eye for detail and a strong dedication to quality
- Proven ability to work independently and manage priorities, deadlines and projects that may involve multiple contributors
- Ability to work collaboratively in small teams
- A commitment to PBE’s focus on using economics to drive wellbeing improvements in the UK
- Some experience analysing large datasets such as the Labour Force Survey, Wealth and Assets Survey or Understanding Society
- Interest in one or more of our key research areas (experience working on these topics is not essential)
