Education & Volunteer Coordinator
British Commercial Vehicle Museum, Leyland
Salary: £24,000 per annum
Hours: 35 hours per week, 9.30am–4.30pm over 5 days
Probation: 6 months

The British Commercial Vehicle Museum is a registered charity celebrating and preserving Britain’s commercial vehicle heritage and the important role Leyland has played in the industry.
We are looking for a proactive, friendly and well-organised Education & Volunteer Coordinator to join our team.
The primary focus of this role is to develop and grow our education programme and manage our team of volunteers. The successful candidate will also carry out general administration duties and support the day-to-day running of the Museum.
A key part of the role will be finding new opportunities to increase the number of school and educational visits to the Museum and grow the income generated through our education programme.
Education
- Take and manage school and educational bookings.
- Proactively build relationships with schools and encourage new and repeat visits.
- Liaise with teachers and provide all necessary information before their visit.
- Welcome school groups and deliver a short welcome talk/presentation.
- Develop fun and engaging age-appropriate activities and learning resources.
- Create and help deliver children's activities and workshops during school holidays.
- Look for new ways to develop the Museum's education programme, increase participation and generate additional income.
- Help promote the Museum as an educational destination for schools and families.
Volunteer Coordination
- Be the main point of contact for Museum volunteers.
- Manage volunteer rotas, event sign-up sheets and daily activities.
- Provide morning briefings and clear instructions to volunteers.
- Recruit, welcome, induct and help train new volunteers to Museum standards.
- Ensure volunteers understand and follow safe working practices and Museum procedures.
- Help maintain a safe and positive working environment for our volunteer team.
- Produce volunteer communications and newsletters.
- Support, motivate and manage volunteers on a day-to-day basis.

Although education and volunteer coordination are the primary responsibilities, this is a varied role within a small Museum team. The successful candidate will also be expected to carry out general Administration and museum duties.
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
- Proactive and self-motivated, with the confidence to develop the role and bring forward new ideas.
- Friendly, approachable and confident when dealing with children, teachers, volunteers and visitors.
- Customer focused, with previous customer service experience.
- Well organised with good administration and communication skills.
- Comfortable managing and supporting volunteers.
- Creative and able to develop engaging educational activities.
- Confident speaking to groups and delivering short presentations.
- Able to work independently and as part of a small team.
- Flexible and willing to support colleagues and other areas of the Museum when required.
- Willing and able to work some weekends, particularly to support Museum events and activities.
- Professional, with a smart and presentable appearance when representing the Museum.
Essential Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Previous customer service experience.
- GCSE qualifications or equivalent.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Good computer and administration skills.
- Confidence dealing with visitors and members of the public face-to-face, by telephone and by email.
- The ability to work effectively with children, volunteers and members of the public.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage different priorities.
- A flexible and positive approach to work.

Experience in education, working with children, volunteer management, museums, visitor attractions or administration would be an advantage, but is not essential.
You do not need to be an expert in commercial vehicles – we can teach you about our collection and its history.
The successful applicant will be required to complete an Enhanced DBS check, which will be arranged and paid for by the British Commercial Vehicle Museum.
The appointment will be subject to a six-month probationary period.
The Opportunity
This is an important role within the Museum. We want to welcome more schools, children, families and visitors through our doors, while continuing to develop and support the volunteers who are at the heart of what we do.
We are looking for someone who wants to take ownership of the education programme, build relationships with schools and bring new ideas to help the Museum grow.

Weekend Working: Some weekend working will be required
