Space Propulsion Engineer
Pulsar is focused on the volume manufacture of space propulsion systems. The work is hands-on, highly diverse, and carries substantial autonomy.
What you will do
- Develop and maintain Pulsar's manufacturing line and test procedures. This will include part cleaning procedures and electrical testing procedures.
- Work closely with the mechanical engineering and propulsion teams to deliver a production line which delivers quality hardware at rate.
- Verify integrity and cleanliness: helium leak checking, particle counting, precision cleaning and degreasing of flight hardware.
- Write and improve test procedures, and raise non-conformances when hardware or paperwork does not match.
- Develop the acceptance test infrastructure for the production line — what gets measured on every unit, on what rig, in what time.
- Automation: Python or C tooling for test control, data reduction and equipment tracking.
- Document the above, and work alongside the mechanical, propulsion and electrical teams delivering the mass production facility.

Required skills and experience
- Degree in aerospace, mechanical engineering, physics or a related discipline.
- Two years or more of hands-on propulsion or spacecraft AIT work in industry.
- Vacuum chamber operations, including the pumps, gauges and safe practice that go with them.
- High-pressure gas handling, with gas safety training and a working knowledge of pressure panels and fittings.
- Data acquisition and instrumentation: DAQ systems, transducer selection and wiring, and post-processing of the result.
- Comfortable in cleanrooms and with ESD-safe working, on flight hardware.
- Able to execute test campaigns autonomously off written procedures, and to write the procedure when none exists.
- Scripting for engineering work: Python, or an equivalent.

Desirable skills
- Electric propulsion test experience: Hall-effect, gridded ion, resistojet or similar.
- Xenon or krypton propellant handling.
- Swagelok certification: safe product selection, tube fitting installation, tube orbital welding.
- Helium leak detection and particle counting to a cleanliness specification.
- Instrument control and test automation: Python, vendor libraries, Arduino-class hardware in the loop.
- CAD and schematics: SOLIDWORKS or similar, and reading P&IDs.
- Exposure to acceptance testing at rate, or to any move from one-off builds to a production line.
- Eligible for UK security clearance.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or physical science discipline.
- A Master’s in space systems, propulsion or a related field is advantageous.
