Electrical Design Engineer
Location: Culham, Abingdon – 3 days per week onsite
Contract: Until 1 March 2027
Rate: £55 per hour Umbrella
IR35: Inside IR35
Clearance: BPSS required
We are currently seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to support major engineering programmes and highly complex technical facilities in Culham.
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering electrical design solutions from concept through to detailed design, ensuring compliance with relevant safety standards, manufacturing requirements and project specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver electrical design activities across major engineering programmes and systems.
- Take ownership of electrical design elements, including repairs, replacements, upgrades and modifications.
- Produce and review electrical schematics, cable schedules, bills of materials and technical reports.
- Develop design requirements, manage interfaces and support configuration and compliance processes.
- Design and develop electrical control panels and enclosures.
- Work closely with engineers, technicians, analysts, suppliers and multidisciplinary stakeholders.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant UK electrical regulations, EU safety requirements and engineering standards.
- Apply design-for-manufacture and value-engineering principles throughout the design lifecycle.

Essential Skills & Experience
- Electrical Engineering qualification such as Degree, HNC/HND, Level 4/5 apprenticeship or equivalent industry experience.
- Strong background in electrical engineering and C&I.
- Experience working with UK electrical regulations and EU safety directives.
- Knowledge of machinery safety and BS EN 60204-1.
- Experience with electrical CAD tools such as EPLAN, SolidWorks Electrical or AutoCAD Electrical.
- Strong AutoCAD/AutoCAD LT experience for electrical documentation.
- Experience designing electrical panels and enclosures.
- Understanding of configuration control, engineering documentation and recognised drawing standards.
- Good knowledge of manufacturing techniques, engineering materials and design-for-manufacture principles.
- Strong communication and technical writing skills.

Desirable Experience
- BS 7671 18th Edition qualification.
- Knowledge of functional safety and process safety.
- Previous experience within nuclear, fusion, defence, scientific research, heavy engineering, automation or special-purpose machinery environments.
