Job Overview
A leading engineering organisation is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to join its established engineering team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an Electrical Design Engineer, Electrical Hardware Engineer, EC&I Engineer or Electrical Project Engineer with experience designing electrical systems for machinery, mechanical handling equipment, lifting equipment, capital equipment or other complex industrial machinery.
Working within a collaborative engineering environment, you will support the design, upgrade and modernisation of complex machinery and mechanical handling equipment, working across the full project lifecycle from detailed design through to testing, installation and commissioning.
Unlike many Electrical Design Engineer opportunities, this role is focused on electrical hardware design, covering power distribution, motor control, drive systems, MCCs and machinery safety systems rather than PLC programming, software development or controls engineering.
The Electrical Design Engineer Role
As an Electrical Design Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering technically challenging projects involving large-scale industrial machinery and mechanical handling equipment.
Responsibilities will include:
- Electrical schematic design and development
- MCC and control panel design
- Power distribution system design
- AC and DC drive systems
- Variable Speed Drives (VSDs)
- Motor control systems
- Machinery safety systems and interlocking circuits
- Electrical equipment specification and selection
- Electrical calculations and design verification
- Technical documentation and engineering reports
- Site surveys and technical support activities
- Supporting installation, testing and commissioning activities
- Working closely with mechanical, manufacturing and project engineering teams

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
