Electrical Engineer – Mott MacDonald Bentley (Scotland)
About the Role & Organisation
Mott MacDonald Bentley is a fully integrated design and build business, combining Mott MacDonald’s design expertise with JN Bentley’s contracting experience. With an annual turnover exceeding £600 million, it is a leader in the industry, delivering award-winning projects.
As part of its work with Scottish Water’s new Enterprise, the team will deliver critical projects across Scotland, including:
- Major upgrades to treatment assets
- New and enhanced water and wastewater networks
- Resilience schemes benefiting communities
With 25+ years’ experience in the water sector, Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) supports Scottish Water’s Regulatory Framework 27 (SR27) priorities, including:
- Enhancing resilience and service reliability through upgrades and schemes
- Supporting net zero and climate adaptation via low-carbon design, nature-based solutions, and environmental compliance
- Enabling sustainable growth through infrastructure that supports development while protecting communities
- Driving efficiency and affordability via integrated delivery, innovation, and collaborative planning

The Opportunity
As an Electrical Engineer, you’ll play a key role in shaping electrical functions across the entire project lifecycle—from feasibility to commissioning. Your work will directly contribute to improving water treatment systems, reducing environmental impact, and ensuring reliable services for communities.
Projects involve:
- New build construction on cutting-edge technology
- Retrofitting and upgrading legacy systems

Key Responsibilities

Design & Engineering
- Develop electrical designs for water treatment equipment, including:
- Motor Control Centres (MCCs)
- Low-Voltage (LV) distribution systems
- Cabling and instrumentation
- Industrial networks, PLCs, and SCADA systems
- Both latest technology and existing installations
- Apply relevant design standards (Client, WIMES standards, and legislation)
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure on-time, budget-compliant designs
- Develop electrical designs for water treatment equipment, including:

Procurement & Technical Liaison
- Produce technical specifications and procurement schedules
- Review supplier tender bids and technical submissions
- Author the User Requirements Specification (URS) for control systems
- Assess supplier Factory Data Sheets (FDS) and attend Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs)

Existing Systems Review
- Analyze and understand current electrical installations via:
- Site visits, drawings, and reports
- Interface requirements with existing infrastructure

Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with clients to align deliverables with their goals
- Manage relationships and support their objectives in water sector projects
Requirements
- Qualification:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
- Professional Development:
- Working towards Chartership (IEng/CEng) with a recognised engineering institution
- Technical Skills:
- Knowledge of electrical design principles for water/wastewater applications
- Ability to interpret and apply design standards and regulations
- Soft Skills & Practical Experience:
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
- Methodical, problem-solving approach
- Strong coordination skills for multidisciplinary projects
- Valid driving licence and willingness to travel across Scotland
