Electrical Engineer – BESS Development
Doncaster / Edinburgh / Hybrid | Fidra Energy

Our Client, Fidra Energy, is developing some of Europe’s most significant battery energy storage projects, helping accelerate the transition to a more flexible, resilient and low-carbon energy system.
Backed by EIG and the National Wealth Fund and headquartered in Edinburgh, Fidra currently has approximately 3GW of secured UK projects, including:
- Thorpe Marsh – 1.4GW
- West Burton C – 500MW
- Bicker Fen 1 & 2 – 1.2GW
Thorpe Marsh is one of Europe’s largest battery development projects and secured funding in September 2025 to progress into construction.
Their ambition is even bigger: to develop a 10GW portfolio across the UK and major European markets by 2030.
To help deliver that ambition, we are looking for an Electrical Engineer to join their Growth & Strategy team.
The Opportunity
We are looking for an Electrical Engineer to support the development of Fidra Energy’s growing portfolio of grid-scale BESS projects across the UK.
The role will provide Electrical Engineering input across the early stages of project development, from site feasibility and capacity assessment through to grid connection, planning, procurement and pre-construction.
You will work closely with colleagues across development, commercial and investment teams, as well as external consultants, DNOs, National Grid ESO, OEMs and EPC contractors. The role will involve assessing technical options, identifying risks and constraints, and helping to develop practical solutions that meet both engineering and commercial requirements.
This is a broad role suited to an engineer who enjoys working across different aspects of project development and applying their technical knowledge to real-world infrastructure projects.
What You'll Be Doing
Project Development & Commercial Support
- Provide electrical engineering input into early-stage BESS development, including site feasibility, capacity optimisation and layout strategy.
- Identify and assess technical constraints and opportunities that could influence project viability, cost, programme and value.
- Support investment, land, and planning decisions through robust technical feasibility assessments.
- Support technical DD vendor assessments and tender reviews for specification compliance
- Identify and manage technical risks before they become project issues.

Grid & Network Connections
- Lead or support grid connection applications and negotiations with DNOs and National Grid ESO
- Interpret and challenge connection offers, technical schedules, and compliance requirements
- Support compliance with UK Grid Code, G99/G100, and relevant ENA Engineering Recommendations
Technical Definition & Risk Management
- Develop high-level electrical concepts including SLDs, protection philosophies, and earthing approaches
- Define technical scope and employer’s requirements for consultants, EPCs, and OEMs
- Review third-party designs and studies to ensure alignment with development assumptions and commercial objectives
- Maintain and manage technical risks through the development lifecycle
Stakeholder & Consultant Management
- Act as the technical interface between internal teams, external consultants, DNOs, OEMs, and EPC contractors
- Support technical due diligence for acquisitions or project financing
- Contribute to tender evaluations and supplier selection from a technical and commercial perspective
What We're Looking For
We're looking for an engineer who combines strong electrical fundamentals, project development experience and commercial acumen.
Essential
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience within UK power, renewables or energy infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of LV, MV and HV electrical systems and PCS technology.
- Knowledge of UK grid connection processes and standards, including G99/G100.
- Experience reviewing consultant, contractor or other third-party technical outputs.
- Experience with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
- Ability to make sound engineering judgements while understanding their commercial and project implications.
Desirable
- Experience working specifically with BESS or co-located renewable energy projects.
- Familiarity with DNO processes, connection queues and connection strategy optimisation.
- Experience in grid code connections, commissioning and compliance requirements.
- Understanding of how planning, land and environmental constraints can influence electrical design.
- Experience supporting technical due diligence, project financing or financial close.
- Experience working on construction projects.
- Chartered Engineer status or active progression towards professional registration.
