Electrical Engineer

Location: Abingdon, Oxfordshire
Working pattern: 4 days per week onsite, with some flexibility
Salary: £35,000 - £80,000 depending on experience
Graduate opportunities from: £25,000+
Benefits: EMI share options, up to 10% annual bonus, 25 days holiday + bank holidays, pension

The Opportunity

Searchability is working with a fast-growing, venture-backed engineering technology company based at Culham Science Centre.

Founded in 2024 as a UKAEA spinout, the company has grown from two to ten employees in around a year and expects to reach approximately twenty people over the next 12 months. The team is developing an AI platform that accelerates hardware engineering while retaining the traceability, technical governance and professional sign-off required for regulated engineering. You'll combine traditional electrical engineering with exposure to cutting-edge AI technology, splitting your time between delivering real engineering projects and helping develop the platform those projects inform.

The Role

We're looking for an Electrical Engineer with strong practical engineering experience who has taken designs beyond drawings and calculations and followed them through into physical delivery. There are two potential backgrounds that could work particularly well.

Machinery Electrical Engineering

You may have experience designing electrical systems for machinery, automation or industrial equipment, including:

  • Machinery Directive requirements
  • EN 60204-1
  • LV distribution
  • Field device wiring
  • Motors and drives
  • Power supplies
  • Electrical cabinet design
  • Electrical calculations
  • Schematics and technical documentation

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Buildings / Complex Facilities

Alternatively, you may come from an electrical building services or complex facilities environment with experience including:

  • BS 7671
  • Low-voltage distribution downstream of the transformer
  • Electrical design for complex buildings or facilities
  • Nuclear facilities
  • Data centres
  • Complex commercial or scientific sites

What We're Looking For

Whichever route you've taken, we're looking for someone who is design-led but practical. You'll ideally have:

  • Experience taking electrical designs through to physical installation or site
  • Strong LV electrical engineering fundamentals
  • Broad rather than highly specialised engineering experience
  • Experience working alongside controls engineers
  • An understanding of real hardware and field devices
  • Some exposure to programming or an interest in developing coding skills
  • The ability to work across multidisciplinary engineering projects
  • An interest in how AI can improve traditional engineering processes

Experience with CE/UKCA marking, technical construction files, declarations of conformity or functional safety would be particularly valuable.

Who Could Fit?

The business will consider candidates ranging from strong graduates through to engineers with approximately 15 years of experience.

Around 5-10 years' experience is the natural sweet spot, although practical ability, attitude and breadth of engineering experience are more important than a specific number of years. Candidates from machinery, automation, nuclear, scientific facilities, data centres and other highly regulated or technically complex environments could all be relevant.

Package

Indicative salary levels are:

  • Graduate: £25,000+
  • Engineer: £35,000+
  • Senior: £50,000+
  • Principal: £70,000 - £80,000

There can be flexibility for particularly strong candidates.

The wider package includes EMI share options for early hires, an annual bonus of up to 10%, 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays and a NEST pension.

Interview Process

You'll initially have a 30-minute screening conversation before progressing to an onsite interview at Culham Science Centre lasting approximately two hours.

The onsite stage combines an informal conversation, a demonstration of current work and a formal interview. A technical exercise may occasionally be provided beforehand.
