Stonehouse Technology Centre (SHTC) is the SLB drilling Centre of Excellence. It supports SLB through innovative engineering and quality-driven manufacturing, with portfolio emphasis on rotary steerable systems, Measurement While Drilling tools, Specialized Measurement tools and Rechargeable Batteries for Downhole use, and power source products.

Over 300 employees work in SHTC's modern, fit-for-purpose building in scenic Gloucestershire. The facility was constructed to handle future demand for PowerDrive tools with an efficient workflow that ensures assembled tools are extensively and rigorously tested before delivery. On site, tools can be monitored using state of-the-art hardware and connectivity that link SHTC to all field locations.

Description & Scope

This internship offers an opportunity to gain practical experience working with Measurement While Drilling (MWD) and Rotary Steerable System (RSS) technologies. Throughout the internship, you will:

  • Drive Innovation: Develop creative and cost-effective engineering solutions to enhance the performance, reliability, and sustainability of electronic tools and products.
  • Apply Technical Expertise: Leverage your electrical engineering skills to analyze, design, and develop electronic boards, tools, and advanced test systems.
  • Lead Development Stages: Participate in all phases of the development process, including design reviews, prototyping, system integration, qualification testing, and thorough documentation.
  • Collaborate Across Disciplines: Work closely with a multidisciplinary team of experts—spanning electrical, software, and mechanical engineers, as well as physicists and designers—to achieve project goals and deliver impactful results.
  • Plan and Execute: Take ownership of technical planning for implementing changes in the field, conducting rigorous testing and validation, authoring functional specifications, and contributing to the development of innovative principles and concepts.

Deliverables

The work will include hands-on exposure to both analog, digital electronics, system integration, circuit testing, signal processing, and hardware troubleshooting. You'll collaborate with experienced engineers, support lab and field-related testing activities, analyse data, and contribute to the development and improvement of advanced drilling tools, providing valuable real-world engineering experience.

Some of the outcomes expected in the internship will be:

  • Perform calculation/simulations to validate designs
  • Develop electronic board and assemblies
  • Develop test system hardware/software/scripts for automated testing
  • Data analytic projects
  • Work with senior engineers to write and to release engineering documents
  • Present work progress, study, findings and design in technical reviews

Qualifications

  • Studying towards a Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Ability to read and interpret electronic schematic
  • Experience with various electronic test instruments (oscilloscope, power supply, multimeter, etc)
  • Exposure to electrical and other simulation software (PSPICE, LTSpice, TiNA)
  • Hands on experience with soldering and circuit testing
  • Ability to work in a team and with strong service and quality focus
  • Exposure to any of the following would be a plus; MATLAB, SciLab, Octave, LabView, any eCAD software
