🔧 Role: Electrical Harness Design Engineer
📍 Location: Staffordshire
💰 Rate: £30ph - £35ph
🏢 Working Pattern: Onsite
We’re currently recruiting for an experienced Electrical Harness Design Engineer to join an established engineering team supporting the design and development of electrical distribution systems (EDS) for vehicle and machinery applications. This is a hands-on engineering role covering electrical schematics, harness drawings, circuit diagrams, and 3D harness routing, taking designs from initial concept through development and into production.
🛠️ The Role
You will be involved in a broad range of electrical engineering and harness design activities, including:
- Designing and developing electrical harnesses and EDS systems for vehicle and machinery applications
- Creating and maintaining vehicle electrical schematics, circuit diagrams, and harness drawings
- Producing detailed 2D electrical harness drawings
- Developing 3D harness installation and routing solutions, including converting legacy 2D designs into 3D
- Applying Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles to harness manufacture and vehicle or machine installation
- Carrying out engineering analysis including fuse-blow analysis, voltage drop, and conductor sizing
- Supporting prototype harness builds, modifications, and testing
- Investigating and resolving electrical design issues and faults identified during development, manufacture, and installation
- Selecting appropriate electrical components while promoting component and design reuse
- Working closely with component suppliers and supporting validation and verification activities
- Producing change-management documentation required to release new designs into production ordering systems
- Maintaining accurate design records, revisions, and engineering documentation
- Taking responsibility for EDS designs from initial concept through development and final delivery
- Working closely with manufacturing and wider engineering teams to ensure designs are practical, robust, and production-ready

💻 About You
We’re looking for someone with:
- Proven experience in electrical harness design and EDS development
- Strong experience using 2D and 3D electrical harness design software
- Experience with Zuken E3 is preferred, although experience with Siemens Capital, SolidWorks Electrical, CATIA Electrical, or a comparable E-CAD platform will also be considered
- Strong understanding of electrical theory, electrical circuits, and vehicle electrical systems
- Experience taking electrical distribution systems from concept through to production
- Experience producing electrical schematics, harness drawings, and circuit diagrams
- Good understanding of electrical component selection, harness manufacture, and installation
- Experience with validation and verification
- Confidence working directly with component suppliers
- Strong practical problem-solving skills and the ability to investigate electrical design issues
- Good IT skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Ideally 3+ years' experience within a Tier 1 harness manufacturer, OEM, or similar electrical design environment
- Experience within on-highway or off-highway vehicle engineering would be highly beneficial
- Experience with Siemens Teamcenter and Siemens NX for 3D harness routing would be advantageous
- Understanding of engineering project delivery, quality systems, and engineering processes
- Knowledge of electrical safety and installation requirements, including ISO 62061 and BS 7671, would be beneficial
- Knowledge of electrical installation testing techniques for hazardous-voltage systems, including City & Guilds 2391 or equivalent, would be advantageous

🎓 Qualifications
HND, degree, or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering or technology discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
🎯 What a strong candidate looks like
You’ll ideally come from an automotive, off-highway, heavy machinery, or Tier 1 wiring harness environment and be comfortable taking ownership of electrical harness designs from initial concept through development and into production. You'll combine strong E-CAD and 2D/3D harness design capability with practical knowledge of how electrical harnesses are manufactured, installed, tested, and modified in real vehicle or machinery environments.
