Role Overview

The Electrical & ICA Technician will be responsible for the installation, testing, commissioning and fault-finding of electrical, instrumentation, control and automation systems across a range of projects.

The role will involve working as part of project delivery and commissioning teams, supporting the successful delivery and performance of electrical and MEICA systems, particularly within the water and wastewater sectors.

The successful candidate will be required to work both independently and as part of a wider team, with regular travel to customer and project sites throughout the UK.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure all Health, Safety, Environmental and Sustainability standards, policies and procedures are adhered to at all times while working on-site.
  • Undertake the installation, testing and commissioning of small to large-scale electrical, instrumentation, control and automation installations.
  • Support project delivery teams in the development and preparation of commissioning and test documentation.
  • Install, test and commission a range of electrical equipment, instrumentation and associated control systems.
  • Install and commission pumps, Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) and associated electrical and control systems.
  • Read, interpret and work from electrical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, control drawings and associated technical documentation.
  • Carry out initial power-up of Motor Control Centres (MCCs), including motor rotation checks and I/O point-to-point checks (dry testing).
  • Install, configure and commission field instrumentation, including scaling 4-20 mA signals to PLC systems.
  • Carry out calibration of field instrumentation where required.
  • Undertake electrical systems fault-finding, testing, rectification and recertification as required.
  • Assist with the commissioning and process proving of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control and automation (MEICA) systems.
  • Work collaboratively with Engineers and project teams to optimise and improve the performance of water and wastewater process systems.
  • Complete all relevant commissioning documentation, including pre-test inspections, commissioning sheets, test records and Site Acceptance Test (SAT) documentation.
  • Attend third-party Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and Site Acceptance Tests (SATs) as required, providing technical input and acceptance sign-off on behalf of the company.
  • Carry out preliminary installation inspections and identify defects or incomplete works, providing snag lists to mechanical and electrical subcontractors.
  • Liaise directly with customers and other project stakeholders during commissioning activities and support the completion and sign-off of works.
  • Proactively plan, review and monitor individual work schedules, managing workloads effectively and working on own initiative where required.
  • Identify potential technical issues, develop and implement appropriate solutions, and escalate issues where necessary.
  • Ensure all works are completed to the required technical, quality, safety and project standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of work undertaken, testing, commissioning and any defects or remedial works identified.
  • Undertake other reasonable duties associated with the role as required.

Requirements

The successful candidate will ideally possess the following qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience:

  • A time-served apprenticeship with significant experience in electrical, instrumentation, control and automation, or mechanical/electrical systems; or
  • A HNC, NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds Level 3 or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation, Control and Automation, or a related discipline.
  • 18th Edition (BS 7671) qualification.
  • Demonstrable experience in the installation, testing, commissioning and process proving of MEICA systems.
  • Strong electrical fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Experience working with instrumentation, PLC-controlled systems, MCCs, VSDs and associated electrical and control equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics and technical documentation.
  • Experience with the installation, calibration and commissioning of field instrumentation and 4-20 mA signals.
  • A practical and methodical approach to problem-solving, with the ability to identify issues, implement solutions and escalate where appropriate.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a wider project delivery team.
  • Ability to liaise professionally and confidently with customers, subcontractors, engineers and other project stakeholders.
  • Mechanical experience would be a distinct advantage.
  • Previous experience within the water and/or wastewater industry would be a distinct advantage.
  • Good understanding of water and wastewater processes would be beneficial.
  • Full clean driving licence.
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout the UK as required by the role.
