Maintenance Technician / Engineer – Electrical Bias
Location:
Devonport Energy from Waste Combined Power and Heat Facility, Camels Head, Plymouth
Some domestic travel might be required which include BMW MINI Plant in Oxford.
About the Role:
We are looking for an Electrical Maintenance Technician/Engineer to support the safe, reliable and efficient operation of an Energy from Waste facility. This role will focus on planned and reactive electrical maintenance, fault finding, regulatory compliance and continuous improvement across key plant systems.
Ideal for:
A safety-focused electrical maintenance professional with strong fault-finding skills and experience in heavy industrial, power generation, Energy from Waste, manufacturing, utilities or similar process environments.
Shift Pattern:
This is a days-based role, working Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm. Overtime is available.
Key Responsibilities:
Electrical Maintenance
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on electrical equipment and systems.
- Diagnose and repair electrical faults on plant machinery and equipment.
- Maintain and troubleshoot:
- HV/LV distribution systems
- Motors and motor control centres (MCCs)
- Variable speed drives (VSDs)
- Transformers and switchgear
- PLC and control systems
- Instrumentation and field devices
- Generators and auxiliary systems
- Perform calibration and functional testing of electrical and instrumentation equipment.
- Support plant shutdowns and major maintenance activities.

Fault Finding and Breakdown Response
- Respond promptly to plant breakdowns and equipment failures.
- Use diagnostic techniques to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Minimise downtime through effective troubleshooting and repair.
Safety and Compliance
- Comply with Health, Safety and Environmental regulations and company procedures.
- Work safely under Permit to Work (PTW), Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO), and isolation procedures.
- Ensure all maintenance activities meet statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in risk assessments, toolbox talks, and safety improvement initiatives.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve plant reliability and maintenance efficiency.
- Support root cause analysis (RCA) investigations.
- Recommend upgrades and modifications to improve equipment performance.
- Contribute to continuous improvement projects and outage planning.
Documentation and Reporting
- Complete maintenance records accurately using the CMMS system.
- Record faults, repairs, and improvement recommendations.
- Assist in developing maintenance procedures and work instructions.

Qualifications and Experience:
Essential
- Recognised electrical apprenticeship or equivalent qualification.
- NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, HNC/HND, or equivalent in Electrical Engineering.
- Experience in heavy industrial environments such as:
- Energy from Waste
- Power Generation
- Chemical Processing
- Petrochemical
- Manufacturing
- Utilities
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
Desirable
- HV Awareness/Authorisation experience.
- Experience with turbines, boilers, generators, switchgear, DCS and CMMS systems.
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
- Knowledge of PLC systems (Siemens, etc.).
- Instrumentation experience.
- IOSH or equivalent safety qualification.
Key Skills
- Electrical fault finding and diagnostics.
- Reading and interpreting electrical drawings and schematics.
- Knowledge of industrial control systems.
- Strong problem-solving abilities.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities.
- Computer literacy and CMMS experience.
