Electrical Subject Matter Expert (SME) – Data Centre

Location: London with flexible working
Position Type: Full-time, Permanent
Reporting to: Head of Design

They are seeking an experienced Electrical Subject Matter Expert (SME) to take ownership of critical electrical infrastructure. Main Job Responsibilities

As the primary technical advisor for all electrical systems, your responsibilities will span across design, optimisation, and collaboration:

  • Design Leadership: Review, validate, and oversee complex electrical designs (HV/MV/LV distribution, UPS systems, backup generators, and switchgear) submitted by external vendors and consultants to ensure maximum redundancy and performance.
  • Strategic Input: Draft strategic intent documents, basis of design documents, and technical specifications that protect the business's interests and establish engineering standards.
  • System Optimisation: Monitor existing data centre infrastructure to identify opportunities for energy savings, scalability, and system optimisation.
  • Troubleshooting: Lead root-cause analysis for any electrical faults, power outages, or system inefficiencies.
  • Project & Commercial Support: Collaborate on the appointment of elite design and engineering teams for new facilities, and provide technical expertise to the sales/RFP process for prospective clients.
  • Commissioning & Operations: Witness key commissioning activities to guarantee installed systems match design intent, and provide ongoing technical support to the site operations team.

What We Are Looking For

  • Experience: 10+ years in electrical engineering, with at least 5 years dedicated to mission-critical infrastructure or data centres (ideally on the client/operator side).
  • Technical Mastery: Deep knowledge of electrical distribution strategies, load calculations, SCADA/BMS/EPMS systems, and relevant industry codes (such as BS 7671, NFPA, IEEE, and Uptime Institute Tier standards).
  • Communication: Exceptional ability to translate complex technical data into clear insights for both technical teams and leadership stakeholders.
