Electrical Systems Engineer - Buckinghamshire - 6 Month Contract (Outside IR35)
Location: Buckinghamshire – Hybrid, 2–3 days per week on-site
Contract: 6 Months, with potential to extend
IR35 Status: Outside IR35
Hours: 40 hours per week
Rate: £Competitive, dependent on experience

Our client is an innovative engineering business developing next-generation unmanned aerial systems and advanced aviation technologies.
Operating within a highly technical, fast-paced R&D environment, the company is focused on developing complex aerospace products that combine advanced electrical, electronic, software and mechanical systems.
The business is continuing to grow its engineering capability and is looking for experienced engineers who can contribute across the development lifecycle, from early-stage requirements and architecture through to integration, testing and product maturation.
This is an opportunity to join a technically ambitious organisation and play a hands-on role in the development of next-generation aerospace technology.
The Role
We are looking for an experienced Systems Engineer with a strong electrical background to support the development and integration of complex systems.
This is not a purely documentation or verification-focused position. The successful engineer will have genuine product development experience and will be comfortable working across requirements, architecture, design support, integration, testing, debugging and system development.
You will work closely with electrical, electronics, software, mechanical and wider systems engineering teams to ensure that individual technologies and subsystems successfully integrate into the complete product.
The role will suit someone who enjoys being close to the hardware and working through real engineering challenges rather than operating solely at requirements or programme level.
Previous experience within UAVs, drones or unmanned systems would be highly desirable, although relevant backgrounds in aerospace, defence, robotics, autonomous systems, automotive or other complex electro-mechanical products will also be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the development of complex electrical and electronic systems throughout the engineering lifecycle.
- Develop, capture, review and manage system and subsystem requirements.
- Contribute to electrical system architecture and overall system definition.
- Translate system-level requirements into practical engineering solutions.
- Work closely with electrical, electronics, software, mechanical and controls engineers.
- Support electrical and electronic hardware development activities.
- Participate in prototype builds and system integration.
- Carry out hands-on integration and development testing.
- Investigate system-level issues and support fault finding and debugging.
- Undertake root cause analysis and drive technical issues through to resolution.
- Review electrical schematics, system interfaces and architecture documentation.
- Support interface definition between electrical, software and mechanical systems.
- Support the integration of sensors, communications, power systems, control systems and other onboard technologies.
- Develop and maintain technical specifications, interface documentation and engineering reports.
- Participate in technical and design reviews.
- Support system verification and validation activities as part of the wider development process.
- Work closely with test teams to define appropriate system-level test activities.
- Support ground testing, prototype testing and wider product development activities.
- Identify technical risks and contribute to mitigation plans.
- Support configuration and change management throughout development.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of systems engineering processes and engineering practices.

Essential Experience
- Proven experience working as a Systems Engineer within a complex engineering environment.
- Strong electrical or electronic systems background.
- Experience contributing to the development of physical products or complex engineering systems.
- Experience working across multiple stages of the product development lifecycle.
- Strong understanding of systems engineering principles.
- Experience developing and managing technical requirements.
- Experience with system architecture and interface definition.
- Hands-on experience with system integration and testing.
- Strong electrical fault-finding and troubleshooting capability.
- Ability to understand electrical schematics and technical documentation.
- Experience working across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Comfortable working closely with hardware, software and mechanical engineering disciplines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to produce clear and structured technical documentation.
- Comfortable working within a fast-moving development environment.
- Able to work on-site in Buckinghamshire 2–3 days per week.

Highly Desirable Experience
- UAV or drone development experience.
- Unmanned aerial systems experience.
- eVTOL or advanced air mobility experience.
- Aerospace systems engineering experience.
- Experience working on safety-critical or highly regulated products.
- Experience supporting prototype or experimental aircraft development.
- Experience with avionics or onboard electrical systems.
- Experience developing autonomous or remotely operated systems.
Additional Desirable Technical Experience
Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:
- Electrical power distribution.
- Battery systems and battery management systems.
- Electric propulsion systems.
- Motors, drives and motor controllers.
- Embedded systems.
- Avionics.
- Sensors and instrumentation.
- Flight control systems.
- CAN Bus.
- Ethernet.
- Serial communication protocols.
- Communications systems.
- Wiring harnesses and electrical integration.
- Data acquisition.
- Hardware-in-the-loop or system-in-the-loop testing.
- Requirements management tools such as DOORS, Jama or Polarion.
Relevant Industry Backgrounds
Candidates may come from environments including:
- UAV / drones.
- Aerospace.
- eVTOL.
- Defence.

- Automotive / EV.
- Motorsport.
- Advanced engineering.
- Other complex electro-mechanical product development environments.
The key requirement is strong hands-on systems development experience, rather than experience focused solely on verification, compliance or requirements management.
Contract Details
- 6-month initial contract.
