About the Company
We are recruiting an experienced Electrical Technician to join a well-established technical service team based in Kempston, Bedford. This is an excellent opportunity for an electrically biased engineer or technician to work with specialist aviation ground support and power equipment, supporting customers across commercial aviation, defence and other specialist environments.
About the Role
The position will primarily focus on the maintenance, fault diagnosis, testing and commissioning of Ground Power Units (GPUs), frequency converters and aircraft fixed ground power systems. The successful candidate will have a strong electrical background, a methodical approach to fault finding and the ability to work both independently and as part of an experienced technical team. This is a varied position combining workshop, site-based and customer-facing responsibilities. You will be responsible for diagnosing electrical faults, completing repairs and maintenance, testing equipment and ensuring systems are operating safely and effectively. The role will involve travel to customer locations, including airport and military environments, with occasional requirements to work away from home or overseas.
Responsibilities
- Carry out electrical maintenance, servicing and repairs on aviation ground power and associated equipment.
- Diagnose and resolve electrical and electronic faults using appropriate testing and diagnostic equipment.
- Inspect, test and sign off repaired equipment both within the workshop and at customer sites.
- Work with Ground Power Units, frequency converters and aircraft fixed ground power systems.
- Read and interpret electrical drawings and technical documentation.
- Attend customer sites and represent the organisation to a high professional standard.
- Ensure all work complies with company, customer and relevant health and safety requirements.
- Maintain a clean, safe and organised workshop environment.
- Complete service reports, expenses and associated technical documentation accurately and on time.
- Take responsibility for company-issued tools, testing equipment and other assets.
- Support commissioning and technical activities where required.

Qualifications
Essential
- NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation/Maintenance or BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, ideally completed through a formal apprenticeship.
- Recognised Level 3 Electrical Testing & Inspection qualification, such as C&G 2391, 2391-10 or C&G 2394/2395.
- 18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations.
- GCSEs in English, Maths and Science at Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Strong ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
- Confident using electrical testing and diagnostic equipment.
- Ideally 2–3+ years' experience within a relevant electrical engineering or technician position.
- Experience working with aviation Ground Power Units, Ground Support Equipment or similar electrical power systems would be highly advantageous.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of electrical maintenance and repair activities.
- Eligibility to obtain military and airside security clearance, including a clean five-year employment and reference history.
- Willingness to travel and work away from home, including occasional overseas assignments.
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving capabilities.

Desirable
- JIB Approved Electrician status.
- Previous experience within aviation, airports, GSE, industrial power systems, generators, UPS systems or frequency converters.
- Good working knowledge of statutory and non-statutory health and safety requirements relating to electrical systems.
