Electrical Technician

Salary: £37,302 (including £2000 Salary Uplift Allowance) + c£200 a week call out

On-Call: currently 1 Week in 4/6

Over Time Payments: Including during call outs

Holiday: 26 Days + 4 Day Christmas + 8 Bank Holiday

Hours: 36.5 Days (Mon-Fri)

About the Role

Estates - Maintenance Operations - Electrical Services

We are seeking an Electrical Technician to provide a reliable, business-critical maintenance service across a large University campus in the Coventry area. The role involves routine, planned and reactive maintenance, fault diagnosis and repairs to electrical and mechanical systems, as well as minor electrical installation works across the University.

The role ensures statutory, planned and breakdown works are completed safely, efficiently, cost-effectively and in line with agreed Service Level Agreements. You will work as part of a small electrical team within a wider 150+ maintenance department, supporting one of the UK’s leading research universities.

Duties and Responsibilities

The role will primarily respond to individual job requests via the job notification system, ensuring each job is resolved safely, efficiently and to the required standard within target SLAs. Deal with emergency situations ensuring each job is resolved on systems which include:

The role will also provide a planned maintenance and reactive remedial work service, directing other trades where necessary to keep essential facilities open and usable, ensuring compliance with statutory testing and inspections including:

  • Periodic Inspection and Testing

  • Emergency Lighting Testing

  • Fire Alarm Testing

  • Portable Appliance Testing

  • Defective repair works

  • Assess, diagnose and resolve electrical faults, determining appropriate solutions and when specialist support is required.

  • Plan and coordinate electrical works, considering timescales, equipment, materials and costs.

  • Lead the installation of minor power systems and support refurbishment, new-build and other electrical projects.

  • Provide technical advice on new products, equipment and installations.

  • Identify and manage risks, ensuring compliance with risk assessments, method statements, legislation and University standards.

  • Prioritise workloads based on urgency, impact, building use and the number of people affected.

  • Maintain accurate records, including work instructions, service reports, timesheets and other required documentation.

  • Calculate and order materials using the appropriate systems.

  • Coordinate small works projects and approved contractors, ensuring works are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to the required standards.

  • Participate in departmental hazard identification and risk assessment activities.

Requirements

  • Recognised electrical apprenticeship, equivalent training, or significant practical experience in commercial, industrial and domestic environments.
  • NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation/Maintenance or equivalent.
  • City & Guilds 236/2330 Levels 2 & 3 (AM2) or equivalent.
  • 18th Edition BS7671 Wiring Regulations (City & Guilds 2382).
  • Inspection & Testing qualification (City & Guilds 2395 or equivalent).
  • IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent, with strong Health & Safety knowledge.
  • Proven experience in electrical installation, maintenance and testing in line with BS7671 and the Electricity at Work Regulations.
  • Strong understanding of statutory electrical compliance and planned preventative maintenance.
  • Full UK/EU equivalent driving licence.
  • Ability to participate in an out-of-hours emergency call-out rota (1 in 4 weeks).

Desirable

  • Knowledge of fire alarm systems in accordance with BS 5839.
  • Experience of working as LV/HV AP
  • Safe Entry into Confined spaces using emergency escape breathing apparatus.
  • Safe use of Hydraulic/Manual lifting platforms, and safe use and erection of mobile tower scaffolding and awareness of asbestos materials and non-licensed removal works.
