Summary

Coventry City Council is looking for a skilled Service Engineer - Electrician to become part of its Facilities Management team on a temporary-to-permanent basis. This role is crucial for ensuring the electrical systems across the Council's properties are maintained to the highest standards. You will report to the Facilities Lead and be responsible for a variety of tasks, including maintenance, repairs, inspections, and installations. A strong background in commercial maintenance and a dedication to adhering to electrical regulations and safety standards are essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and address reactive electrical repairs.
  • Install, maintain, and repair commercial electrical systems and lighting.
  • Manage the installation and upkeep of fire alarm systems and EV charging infrastructure.
  • Perform electrical inspections, testing, and certification when qualified.
  • Diagnose and repair faults in electrical systems and equipment.
  • Execute electrical upgrades and new installations.
  • Ensure compliance with electrical regulations, British Standards, and Approved Codes of Practice.
  • Complete tasks within set timelines and provide progress updates.
  • Prepare quotations and estimates for electrical remedial works as needed.
  • Keep accurate records of completed work, materials, and inspection outcomes.
  • Utilize CAFM systems for managing work orders and generating reports.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles in safe, working condition.
  • Ensure the security and safe operation of plant, equipment, and work areas.
  • Mentor apprentices and trainees, providing support and guidance.
  • Report issues beyond authority levels to the Facilities Manager or Supervisor.

Essential Requirements

  • NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation or equivalent qualification.
  • Recognized City & Guilds, CITB accreditation, or equivalent electrical qualification.
  • 18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations certification.
  • Extensive experience in a commercial maintenance setting.
  • Proficient in planned and reactive electrical maintenance.
  • Skilled in electrical fault-finding, testing, and diagnostics.
  • Experience with installing and maintaining:
    • Commercial lighting systems
    • Fire alarm systems
    • EV charging points
    • Electrical fixtures and fittings
  • Strong knowledge of electrical safety standards and compliance.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with clients, contractors, and colleagues.
  • Full UK Driving Licence and ability to pass a DVLA licence check.
  • Capability to obtain and maintain an Enhanced DBS clearance.

  • City & Guilds 2391 Inspection & Testing certification.
  • PASMA and IPAF certifications.
  • Experience with:
    • Solar PV Systems
    • Heat Pumps
    • EV Charging Infrastructure
  • Familiarity with CAFM systems.
  • Experience in Local Authority, Education, Healthcare, or Public Sector environments.

Additional

  • Participation in an out-of-hours or late working rota as needed.
  • Enhanced DBS clearance required.
  • DVLA licence check required before starting.
  • Role exempt under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, subject to satisfactory DBS clearance.
  • Flexibility in working patterns to meet service demands.
