About Us
Makefast is a leading UK engineering and manufacturing company, supplying innovative products to the luxury marine and safety industries. With over 100 employees across three sites in Mid Wales, we are committed to quality, innovation and investing in our people.
About The Role
We’re looking for an experienced Electro-Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Engineering team, designing and developing integrated mechanical and electrical systems for Makefast’s range of marine and safety products.
This is a varied role combining mechanical design with electrical and control system integration. You’ll work on new and existing products from concept and development through to manufacture, testing and production, working closely with Design, Production and Assembly teams to deliver practical, reliable and manufacturable engineering solutions.
We’re looking for someone with a strong engineering background who is comfortable working across both mechanical and electrical disciplines and solving complex technical problems.
Key Responsibilities
Electro-Mechanical Design & Development
- Design and develop electro-mechanical products, systems and assemblies from concept through to manufacture.
- Produce 3D CAD models, detailed engineering drawings and associated design documentation.
- Design and specify mechanical components, assemblies and mechanisms.
- Design and develop electrical systems, including component selection, wiring, connections and system integration.
- Produce and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and technical documentation.
- Develop and modify existing products to improve performance, reliability and manufacturability.
- Ensure designs consider functionality, materials, manufacturing methods, assembly, quality and cost.
Control Systems & Integration
- Support the design and integration of motors, actuators, sensors, switches and other electrical and electronic components.
- Develop engineering solutions that integrate mechanical, electrical and control systems.
- Support the specification and integration of control systems appropriate to the product.
- Work with relevant technologies such as PLCs, CANbus and other control systems where applicable.
- Support system configuration, testing and troubleshooting during product development.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
