Level: 6
Salary: £23,776
Location: Bristol Hub (Ashton House and Babcock Technology Centre)
Application closing date: 8th December 2026
Programme start date: September 2027
Role ID: 74958

About the programme

You'll begin by working alongside experienced engineers, developing a strong understanding of the Design Engineer role and its application within the naval and defence sector. As your skills and knowledge develop, you'll take on increasing responsibility, contributing directly to projects that support Submarines, Surface Ships, and advanced Communications technologies.

Throughout the programme, you’ll develop crucial skills in electrical and mechanical design, requirements definition, use of test equipment and hand tools, and more. You’ll gradually take on more responsibility, supported every step of the way by your team and mentor.

Whether you're problem-solving with colleagues or applying theory to practice, you'll build your skills while contributing to meaningful projects.

Your education/training

As part of your apprenticeship, you will work towards a BEng (Hons) degree in an engineering discipline through an approved university and training provider. The exact delivery model may vary but will include a combination of academic study, structured training and practical workplace experience.

Throughout the programme, you will develop the technical knowledge, professional skills and industry experience needed to succeed in your engineering career. On successful completion of the programme and End-Point Assessment (EPA), you will be well placed to progress into a substantive engineering role within the business.

Future prospects

Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship, you'll have the opportunity to move into a substantive role, typically as an Assistant Engineer or Engineer within one of our engineering disciplines.

Apprentices who complete the programme can expect a competitive starting salary, alongside opportunities to pursue professional registration and chartership, supported by experienced mentors and industry professionals.

As a global organisation, Babcock offers a wide range of opportunities to develop your skills and progress your career. Through our Babcock Role Framework, you'll have visibility of potential career pathways and development opportunities, helping you shape your progression and achieve your long-term career goals.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
