Overview
Reporting to the Engineering Director, the SMART & Communications Manager will lead local and remote Engineering teams in the delivery of new battery powered products and technology solutions within the SMART Electronics & Communications function.
The role requires a dynamic, high-energy leader who can accelerate delivery, drive innovation, and build a high-performance engineering culture whilst maintaining excellence in quality, compliance, cost, and customer satisfaction.
Key responsibilities
- Manage highly technical engineering teams both locally and remotely (India)
- Manage 3rd party suppliers
- Manage NPI portfolio in terms of priorities and deliverables on time/quality/cost
- Ensuring critical to success documentation is created / followed i.e. project plan, specification & DVP etc
- Creating and managing work packages for direct reports
- Work closely with internal technical & domain experts balancing commercial and technological aspects
- Direct interaction with customers at all levels, discussing their needs, products and use cases
- Matching technology capabilities with customer’s needs and commercial objectives
- Generating end to end technology strategy for both firmware and hardware
- Financial management and metrics of the team and function
- Manage root cause analysis activities
- Ensure all facilities are exploited working closely with test, measurement, materials and prototype capabilities
- Drive continuous improvement and champion a transformational mindset

Key skills and qualifications
Must have:
- Degree in Electronics Engineering, Communications Engineering, Physics or a related discipline
- 8+ years' experience in product development within a fast-paced engineering environment
- Proven leadership of technical teams and complex product development programmes
- Experience delivering electronics products through the full lifecycle from concept to production
- Strong knowledge of LPWAN or other wireless communications technologies
- Strong experience with low power battery devices
- Broad technical understanding across hardware, firmware and embedded systems
- Experience of product verification, validation, regulatory compliance and engineering governance
- Strong customer-facing, communication and stakeholder management skills
- Demonstrated ability to drive innovation, challenge assumptions and deliver results
- Self-motivated, commercially aware and comfortable operating in ambiguous environments
