Role: Electronics Design Engineer / Electronics Development Engineer

Location: Aberystwyth
Salary: £39,000 to £45,000 + Bonuses

An Electronics Design Engineer opportunity has become available with an established world leader in scientific instrumentation located in the Aberystwyth.

This is a rewarding opportunity for a skilled Electronics Design Engineer to join a team of mixed discipline engineers involved in the research and development of scientific instruments which are used globally within the pharmaceutical, research and process industries.

The successful candidate will have proven experience in Electronics Development, PCB Design & Layout using Altium or similar for analogue and digital electronic systems.

Electronics Design Engineer - Responsibilities:

  • Schematic capture, PCB layout, circuit simulation, and verification for electronic assemblies.
  • Build, test, and debug prototype instruments to validate core system performance.
  • Design for testability by integrating ICT nodes to support down-line automated testing.
  • Manage CAD component libraries and handle component obsolescence.
  • Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) best practices.
  • Convert engineering design packages into standardized manufacturing procedures for production.
  • Partner with Process Engineering to deliver technical training on delicate soldering, board flashing, and system calibration.
  • Work with software engineers to automate manufacturing, calibration, and test processes.
  • Perform end-to-end system testing, authoring detailed reports to confirm product readiness.
  • Investigate manufacturing process non-conformances, establishing robust corrective actions.
  • Maintain compliance with company processes under ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 management systems.
  • Communicate quality and performance requirements to external suppliers and contract manufacturers.

Skills & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Proven PCB schematic design and layout, taking designs from concept through to production.
  • Expertise in designing analogue and digital electronic systems incorporating ARM-based microcontrollers and modern communication protocols e.g., I2C, SPI, UART, CAN.
  • Hands-on proficiency with bench tools including oscilloscopes, logic analysers, signal generators, and standard workshop equipment.
  • Practical skills in building prototype hardware and troubleshooting complex circuit-level issues.
  • Understanding of relevant CE Directives and EMC with direct experience designing and testing for standards compliance.
  • Managing product and process V&V lifecycle requirements.
  • Proficient in standard productivity tools across Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.

Desirable skills:

  • Advanced PCB Layout & HDI: Proficiency in Altium Designer, with experience designing High-Density Interconnect (HDI) PCBs and fine-pitch / Chip Scale BGAs.
  • Control Systems & Hardware Integration: Designing for and integrating sensors, controllers, electric motors, and PLCs.
  • FPGA & Embedded Development: Skilled in FPGA hardware design, firmware and software application development.
  • Industrial Digital Communications: Direct experience implementing industrial communications protocols e.g., ProfiNet, EtherNet / IP, OPC-UA.
  • RF & Compliance Testing: Hands-on experience utilizing Spectrum Analysers for signal analysis, debugging, and pre-compliance EMC testing.
  • Cleanroom & Assembly Operations: Familiarity with electronic assembly processes within cleanroom environments and training technicians on new manufacturing procedures.
  • Quality & Process Control: Statistical Process Control and exposure to MRP systems for production planning.
  • Data Analysis & Scripting: Automate test routines and perform numerical analysis using Python, MATLAB, or equivalent tools.
  • Version Control & Project Management: Experience using source control systems such as Git alongside strong project planning and time-management capabilities.
